Another hell of an idea!

While I was reading mazkid's idea I thought of another one. Tons of people have cell phones and alot of the newer ones have internet access. I wonder if we could make the forums viewable on cell phones by making a cell phone compatible site. I'd have to do some research but it may be possible. I'll see what I can dig up.

You know that is a great idea, but then I think. . . These people are now going to be driving around browsing GTP and causing accidnets now instead of talking on the phone and causing accidents. I personnally frown upon this idea due to that issue.

If they're that stupid then they deserve to die. At work I have my laptop but no internet connection. So I have to use my cell phone and accessing GTP would be awsome! Also waiting in lines, waiting for food in restaurants there are tons of places you could use it without causing a wreck.
 
I think Giles asked Jordan to this many months ago, but WML is almost a completely different markup than HTML (well, not completely different, but it's really, really stripped down to the bare essentials), you have to configure the server to send WML files, and perhaps the most confusing part would be getting the server to send out both HTML and WML pages that have the same content (I don't know how this is done on a dynamic website)... it'll be much easier if/when the web moves to XML pages, but that's not happening anytime soon.

I don't know anything about server-side technologies, but I know enough about structure to get along. :)
 
Uh, if I'm not mistaken, that's meant to be run on a Linux box, so I can't exactly test it.
 
As far as I can tell, that conversion script only works with static pages, not dynamic content. Nevertheless, I'm not sure if there would be enough people browsing the site with their cell phones to justify this feature.
 
what do u mean there wouldnt be enough people browsing on thier cell fones i have unlimited night and weekend minutes id be going crazy right now if u made gtplanet viewable by cell!

No, what I wanted was the recording of "style in use" (Standard vs Lite) in the cookie, so that you could adjust the style in use for the devices you were using to access, then my PDA (over GSM) would default to GTP Lite, but the full workstations would get the full style.

Sadly, not possible.
 
Smartphones can view GTP, but it doesn't look pretty.

does my palm use the same internet "style" as my fone because i dont have the internet on my palm but im thinking about it and if gtplanet was viewable from my palm i would never pay attension in class again!
