God help us for posting about another Mustang iteration, but with Ford's commitment to bring a variant of the Pony car to market each year, it was simply a matter of time before the rumors began to swirl. This newest one, courtesy of MustangEvolution, contends that a revival of the Mach 1 is due out sometime in 2009.

While another special edition 'Stang is enough to cause a bout of acid reflux, the basis for the Mach 1 may be yet another tribute to the coupe's cinematic roots. James Bond drove a red Mach 1, sans black stripes and mag wheels, in 1971's Diamonds are Forever, and supposedly Ford is looking for the original car as the basis for the 2009 model. While we can argue the merits of another Mustang variant, a Bond-badged version might seem a bit more palatable – barely.

C'mon Ford. Bring back the d*mn Cobra.

What does this "special edition" include? I hope it is more than red paint, badge removal, new wheels and a special sticker.

And I don't really get this new edition every year thing either.

If it has a shaker scoop, than I think it is awesome (with less sarcasm than you might think). If it does not, than Ford can go die.

Ford actually has a package for the Mustang called the Boss 302 package that has a shaker scoop on it. However, it's nothing special at all. It barely moves....

I'm intrigued, both as I don't know anything about this car and because I don't know how well a shaker hood will work on the current Mustang.

Is 2009 the one that's going to look similar to this?:

Diamonds are Forever was a pretty cool Bond film, and the car could be pretty awesome. The concept does remind me of the 1971, which I've always liked(bit strange?). Also, I'm a much bigger fan of the Bond series than the Bullit, or Steve McQueen. :D

I need your address so I can throw a brick through your front window...

McQueen in Bullitt is certainly one of my all-time-favorite movies, and certainly better than the majority of Bond films.

===

As for the Mach1 coming down the pipe, it could be expected. I'd prefer a "real" Mach1 with all the essentials, skipping the Bond-esque model.

Unless of course this is a product tie-in for the next Bond Film, yet to be titled.

Just turned 21, and already sounding like a drunken sailor. :p j/k

Ford has to create a new Mustang...Chevy is about to release their Camaro soon, and Dodge will have the Challenger....the "new Mustang" is actually about 4 years old and aging..so they better come up with something to dazzle us Stang fans. (me inlcluded)

Well as much as I believe that nothing can beat the Camaro for pure sexiness, it would be nice to see Ford taking note from Chevy and Dodge by going retro on the 09 Stang.

But I do not agree with using Diamonds are Forever as inspiration. The colour, wheel trims, front arrangement are some of the things I HATED about that films Mach 1. Original Eleanor would be a better starting point: http://www.gatewayclassiccars.com/images/carpics/STL/3343/3343.jpg

and with an off-note, could it be said the current Stang is THE most wh*red car ever? Saleen, Roush, Ford, etc all keep using it.

I'm pretty sure the Cobra will be forthcoming some day. Most of you know I'm not very good with movies and never seen too many James Bond movies. So I'll have no recollection of this deal. As far as I'm concerned with the revival of the muscle car, Chevy may as well make a Yenko Camaro when the new Camaro drops in a few years (next model year?). This latest Mustang is awesome no matter how you see it.

As an off-topic note, I'm guessing cars that have all kinds of iterations and models are usually there for a reason. It has to be a good car with the potential of other firms to make it better. The other variations have to be different from the base car (I use "car" loosely) in some sort of way. Since there's a rule in popular car culture that you never give Japanese cars or Japanese sports cars any chance or love, you may well say that the Mustang is America's Skyline/GT-R. You know, in the sense of everyone coming up with different variations and styles of the same car. I know I just ordered a GTPlanet tongue-lashing from the menu, so go ahead and fire away at me for this paragraph. Not my first rodeo, you know.

Why doesn't Ford just waste the money on calling one of these models a Cougar and give it to Mercury?

You know... I was under the impression that our current model of Mustang is the retro model. The styling is straight from the very first Mustangs.

In any case, on the ride home today I ended up behind a 281 saleen of the new model mustang. 👍
Looked and sounded nice. :D

Same here. Just like the Thunder Bird was done in retro flavor. So using the old designs is nothing new, especially not for Ford.

I really hope so. That's pretty much the only version of the current Mustang I've liked, the proportions are so much better than in the stock one. Just give it normal doors, a metal roof, and roll it out.

The "retro" Mustang we have now looks like the chassis had begun the acceleration a bit earlier than the body, the combination of an excessive rear overhang and a very short nose overhang is just too much for my brain to process. No idea why they made it like that, the original fastback never suffered from that problem.

I've been saying that for months now, and it seriously is surprising that Ford hasn't at least considered it. I'm surprised no one has done a photochop of it yet, seems as though it would have been fairly easy for the design to transfer onto the Mustang chassis.

Although this at one point was going to be the new Cougar:

and thank the lord...wow, headlights straight out of the '90s, and a grille that could pass for a Dodge's, especially if the car were red.

But I can't see a business case for the Cougar, at least not yet. It's the same reason there won't be a Firebird: they cant' sell two ponycars at this time.

Mercury certainly could if they actually placed enough effort into designing a decent interior and having a competent enough suspension to make it a cheaper alternative to cars like the CTS Coupe or 335i Coupe.

I'd say make it with an IRS, heavy use of premium vinyl and plastic on the interior (still vintage style like the Mustang, wood trim), 300 BHP Turbocharged V6, 6-speed automatic... All for a little more than $30K. Make it above the GT, but below the GT500, and certainly leave room for the MKR (should Lincoln decide to build it).

Hm...now THAT sounds like a plan. I especially like the Twin Turbo V6 idea. Gives it a bit of a GT-R Grand Tourer sound to it. and that may get Pontiac designing a premium FR coupe as a direct competitor, be it G7 or Firebird. More than likely G7, if they go the V6 route.

Then again, there DOES seem to be a lack of satisfactory K.I.T.T....Firebird reborn? Let's just hope they don't decide to mangle a certian Burt Reynolds movie with it...
