I'm helping a friend build a PC. He has around an 800$ budget and it's going to be for pretty much pure gaming.

He already has a 500 gig HDD in his old computer so I didn't add an HDD to the list and told him to wait until prices drop. I also left out the case for him to pick out.

Here's what I've come up with. Tear it apart guys and tell me what to change. It seems like a decent build to me, but I'm sure some things could be done different.
In my cart this comes up to 839$ with 70$ off if he does the mail in rebates.

i5-2500k and mobo.

2gig 6950 I've never heard of visiontek though and don't know if this deal is too good to be true or not

8gig corsair vengence 1600 ram

750w PSU.

One thing I'm not sure about is if he decided to go crossfire later on would that mobo support 2 6950s?

Why would a board with one PCI-e slot support Crossfire...?

Combo deals rarely give you anything of value. Pick a different board + a 2500k

Another thing to consider, does he already have an Operating System to install?

Be sure it's 64-bit are you are wasting his money with more than 4gb of ram.

I haven't really looked at all the parts, but I agree, bundle packages are hard to get all the parts that you need. I have seen some, however, that are like Processor + SSD that seem pretty decent deals from Newegg.

visiontek has been around for a while. If you buy refurb, be sure to test it properly to make sure it isn't defective. If you live near a microcenter, you can drive there and buy the 2500k for $180 and get a z68 board if you want a newer motherboard with more features.

Thanks guys.
I thought that board had 2 slots. I must have linked the wrong one on accident.

Anyone got a suggestion on a quality cheap mobo that can do crossfire? No need at all for overclocking ability. I know that's what the 2500K is for, but he will never, ever try and overclock.

Good catch on the PSU Road dog. I've never seen a harsher first line of a review then that one.

Here is the computer he is thinking about buying. It seems like a decent deal really considering it comes with windows. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...1&csid=ITD&recordsPerPage=5&body=#ReviewStart

I'm trying to beat that price with a better system.

Well that was the conclusion.

And yes it does.

Here's my list:
Case $50-60
2500k $230
z68 mobo $130-140
8GB RAM $40-50
6950 for $220-240
OCZ/Corsair/Antec PSU $65-90
Windows 7 HP - $100
DVD Drive - $20

On the lower end it comes out at $860 without a hdd/ssd drive.

Subtract $110 to go down to a 6770. ~$750

You could probably save a couple more bucks on the case/RAM/motherboard, but it doesn't look promising. Save $20 on the CPU for the non-K version. That company probably gets a nice discount on the O/S. I wouldn't put a big emphasis on Crossfire.

2500 CPU -20
This motherboard -15
It supports Crossfire.
