I just started watching the show and it really caught my interest, but there's one thing constantly throwing me off. Why is there different people as the main characters every time I watch the show? At one point Dr. Who(i assume) was the baddie from the the Angelina Jolie Gone in 60 seconds, then its another guy with some really cute chick, then its the same guy with a new black chick(the jury is still out on her). What the heck is going on?!?!?

Throughout the years The Doctor has been played by different actors. They work this in by making him regenerate. Since the show was revived in 2005 The Doctor has regenerated twice.

The Doctor also travels with different people every one or two seasons.

Doctor Who is a great show and you should really enjoy it. I suggest watching the entire show through starting from the first episode of the 2005 series.

Hope this helps

Who, did you say? Doctor who?
I love Dr. Who! Ever since I was a kid there have been different incarnations of the Doctor but the Time Lord and his TARDIS are (almost) constants in time. He may look different but he is the same being. Don't worry, I know you probably have a ton of questions since you just started watching but take XRFalcon's advice and watch from the 2005 series beginning. Part of the fun of Doctor Who is discovering all the mysteries that surround him. I Highly recommend!

Although the 4th Doctor is esteemed as one of the best of the now 11 Doctors, I think David Tennant's #10 is at the very least a blisteringly close second.

Me too! I joined public TV at the age of 14 to support the program and get a coffee cup with a disappearing TARDIS, and I've played the FASA roleplaying game...

Gallifreyans (aka Time Lords) developed the ability to regenerate into a new body when they die, keeping their memories though. Very convenient for a long term series! Started way back in the 50's? At one point the longest running show on TV.

Yes, the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) is iconic, and was the Doctor I grew up with. The budget was very low, sets and special effects very cheap, but the stories and the acting great. If you like the new series, I'd recommend trying out a few tom Baker episodes if you can find them at the library or something.

The new series is very much different from the old. Even younger (appearing) Doctors. The Doctor kissing (gasp!) his companions on occasion. More geared towards a younger audience with modern tastes. Still very entertaining, I'm glad it's back.

I enjoy the storylines of the individual episodes, but I find it really to actually figure out the storyline throughout the series'.

There never used to be a "season" storyline. It was always like four 45-minute episodes that made a single short story. That's one thing I like better about the old Tom Baker era. This new stuff, it's like they're trying to tie things together and build to some grand point.. or you could say finale... but that kind of defeats the purpose of a program established on the basis of a regenerating main character so that it could go on indefinitely, in other words, without a finale. Long running series should stick to being episodic, and pretty much avoid character development. Just keep us entertained with good stories.

Edit: hey, start of the new season! good timing for a response to this thread!

It sounds to me like they are not playing the series in sequence. You must be watching random shows from the last few seasons.

personally, im not too keen on the matt smith ones (except the WW2 dalek one)
i think they spend ages building up to the big action part, which is then over in about 10 minutes

Matt Smith is doing fine, better than I'd expected, especially seeing how he had such big shoes to fill. David Tennant is currently polling as everybody's favorite Doctor of all time (although I bet most polled have only seen the last 3...)

At the end of the David Tennant's last season Russel T Davies left the program, and now the writing is supervised by Steven Moffat. This most likely is why you feel the story pacing has changed with Matt Smith's episodes.

OMG OMG OMG!

I totally guessed the twist in tonights episode, 'A Good Man Goes To War'! I've had my suspicions that River Song is Amy's child since the pregnancy was revealed. I was also toying with the idea that the girl in the space suit is River too. Which would fit nicely in with River saying something along the lines of she'll be there at the doctors end? She'd be the girl in the space suit that kills him! It all adds up!

Excitement!
