Any Donors here?

*waves hand* I just donated my kidney to my father who has kidney disease and was losing function on his last remaining kidney. Was able to donate before he went on dialysis which is awesome. I had mine done at UCSF and this was the first time I've ever had surgery or ever stayed in a hospital overnight. The only problems I experienced was a ultra high tolerance for pain medication, and my nurses had to practically beg for something stronger as nothing was working. >.<

Anyone else gone through this and have any tips of the trade to share?

Well done man! 👍
It must be a kind of frightening thing to do to donate one of your organs. Any surgery is frightening for that matter. I've never donated before but I plan on passing my organs on to good use after I'm dead. :)

Thank you for doing that Prosthetic. I really respect organ donors, especially when you are donating before death. I regularly donate blood, and plan to give what I'm not using away once I depart.

Joking aside...

Honorable  - I work with a guy who donated a kidney to his sister (or vice verser) - they both leed perfectly normal lives 👍

Awesome Prosthetic 👍, you just gave an example of humanity, courage and love to the world.

+1.000.000 rep.

Yeah real cool, but for me giving it to the family should be considered normal, otherwise what an ******* would you be?
That should not smaller Prosthetic donation at all. Just saying...

having a donor card is real great, but I also respect people who don't want because of believes. But people who don't and don't know why is not so great.

Nice one man, I would donate my kidney if somebody was suffering from a kidney disease in my family too 👍

I'm on the bone marrow donor register and I donate blood when I am able. I have an organ donor card and would quite happily give a kidney to a family member whose need was greater than mine.

Well done that man for giving away one of your filters :D

Im on the registar to donate everything except my kidneys (although im down to allow research on those) as they are weakened by a condition and I may even be the one needing a kidney. It also means I cant donate blood.

In Belgium everyone who dies is an organ donor unless you explicitly sign against it.
That's alright with me.

That's very nice of you Prostetic.

As I type this I'm in my tenth week in a medical care facility suffering from a rare genetic disease that will one day leave me with needing a body part, so thank you for donating.

My dad has just joined the donor register, he got the letter with the card yesterday.

I will join the register when I'm 18 and legally allowed too.

Thanks for all the kind words people 👍 Awesome to see lots of you that have done what you can so far.

I had the same feeling towards the matter. Its what I said to my social worker if I was *up* to going through with it. I would say yes a million times over.

I love this, and wish more countries adopted this way of thinking.

What kind of body party? Good luck on your future adventures with this, sounds like a bitch to deal with. :ouch:

Well done Prosthetic 👍.

Two years ago i donated my bone marrow to a 10 year girl i never knew. I dont know how you guys call it. We call it bone marrow. They only took a sample of my blood. She had leukemia.

EDIT: and i give blood once a year.

Cool you understood it how I meant it. Was worried someone could take it the wrong way.

Horde: Very brave of you, that hurts like a *****.

It might be a given that anyone in the same situation would donate and I like to think I would without hesitation. But honestly, if this situation ever happens to me, I'm not sure I will. You never know until it happens.

This is why I must congratulate Prosthetic. Really nice one 👍

I've only donated blood and opinions, i don't think anyone wants anything else from me!

But good job anyway prosthetic.. :D

Right now, it's my legs and heart. Tomorrow, it could be my kidneys, since there are now 'signs' of it happening.

I've always wanted to donate my body after death. The only thing I'm not sure about is my brain. Scientists use brains to do research for medical science. My fear is that they may send a jolt of electricity into it and bring me to life again!

When I'm dead I want to stay dead!

But apart from my brain, they can use whatever they want. 👍

As soon as I got my driver's license I signed up as an organ donor. I would certainly give a kidney to a family member who needed it. As far as donating blood goes, I haven't done so yet, but only because you have to be 17 to donate blood. I turned 17 in September, and there's a blood drive at my school in November, and I'll certainly be giving blood 👍

It's something I've always felt strongly about, because my uncle died after a liver transplant that his body rejected. I want to give everything possible, skin, eyes, any internal organs, whatever is needed that could possibly save or improve someone else's life. I know how hard it is to find organs for transplants, and I want to do my part to help fix that.

I donate blood anytime the blood bus shows up at campus. Free cookies and kool aid too. :D I'm sure if any of my relatives needed a transplant of some sort, I'll be the first in line.

I would donate my bits and bobs once I've kicked it but I doubt anyone would want my leftovers. My lungs are probably back, my liver fatty, my heart clogged and my other parts are equally as bad.

A friend of mine has CF and after his second lung transplant, yes, second, he was implanted with a pair that had TB! He's 43 now and still going...er......OK.

I don't give blood because I don't think the is much left in my alcohol stream.

Good on ya and everyone who has donated organs to help others.

I can't even donate blood, because I always tend to get dizzy just from blood tests :nervous:

Bone marrow, yeah. That's an awesome (and painful) thing you did. Kudos to you, karma is on your side.

I wouldn't put this in the same situational thinking as "will I fight this armed man to save this person". For me it was an easy decision for both me and my sister. The whole process hasn't been that bad, really only the first night sucked but after that I've slowly gotten better. At this point I'm pretty much completely independent outside the fact I still can't drive until next Tuesday and if I'm off pain medications.

Right now, it's my legs and heart. Tomorrow, it could be my kidneys, since there are now 'signs' of it happening.
That sucks man, best of luck to you.👍 Hope everything works in your favor.

I used to be a blood donor, just do not seem to get it organized for the moment.

Also a recommendation for everyone is to have a "bone marrow biopsy" done an get yourself in a donation database.

Some far away nephew (but also good friend) had leukemia when he was about 17 and got saved by a "bone marrow" donation of his sister, but not everyone finds a donor easily!

And that's the way it should be. I'd gladly let someone have my heart if it was working great and I had no use for it. I mean, what's the point of signing against it?
