Any info on GT4's AI?

in the new demo, the AI with the supra is really defensive, he slams on the brake on alot of corner where his speed is not too quick, while the Evo8 AI is really aggressive and will push u out into the grass.

I'd love to have different AI styles in GT4, as I find that resembles real life racing. Each driver has his/her own style, so if GT4 has this, great! However, as Jedi2016 said, there's a fine line between aggressive driving and stupid driving. Let's hope PD sticks to the aggressive side. ;)

All I want is an AI that actually thinks.. you know, the "intelligence" half of "Artificial Intelligence". One that, if I'm taking the inside of a corner, it actually knows I'm there, and takes the outside. Rather than slamming into me six ways to Sunday to try to get back into it's "line". In real life, racers tend to want to avoid contact with other cars.. but in GT, the cars don't even know you're there. That right there is the crux of the AI argument, and the source of all the complaints about GT's AI.. it all boils down to the fact that the AI cars do not adjust their driving based on the location of the player's car... They're oblivious, and are simply stuck to their pre-programmed line. Which is frustrating for several reasons.. one, they can bump you right off the road without realizing it, and there are plenty of times where you're forced OUT of your own racing line because the AI car's driving like an idiot.

The most intelligent (pun intended :D ) comment I've ever read about GT's AI. If PD would address this and the rubber band effect, this would be hands down the greatest racing game ever created.

Rubber Band is in there intentionally

I agree 100%! I think it's either a big sign of laziness (doubt it, doesn't seem to be PD style, and they seem to be an anal bunch), time constraints (very possible, but they don't seem to mind delaying this game so who knows) or Sony wants the rubber band effect in the game to appeal to the masses. IMHO, I think AI does not sell games to the masses. Sony knows this, and there for more time is spent on aspects that sell (i.e. graphics!). AI is only important to simmers, people who want the most realistic racing possible.

I so want this game to have good AI. :banghead:

nope...nothing in particular....if you've looked at what people have been saying about Prologue, AI is not much imporved. however, this may be rectified in the real version...the AI might be pretty good. there's no way to tell until we get the finished product.

yeah the ai of prologue is even worse than in gt3 (feels like the ai of concept)
20 secs. gap between you and the rest of the field is the rule.
but pd got so much critics about that topic, i think they just HAVE TO DO something for a better ai

PD should do NOTHING about AI. Maybe just leave out the handicap and stop them from butt-ramming while braking.

If you want good competitors, race with your friends in 2P mode r in LAN, or online (when aplicable).

Developing an AI which will be past-tense-issue in less then a year - when online community will hipefully form - and it is a total waste of money, TIME (delays, anybody?) and valuable resources.

And what is the good AI anyways? If I drive like the Devil Himself, no AI can catch me. Human maybe, but show me that AI that can compete with human driver in the same set-ups. All they shoud do is balance the competition in-game, and from we had heard so far, GT4 will have an "points" for different handicaps, so that is just fine IMHO.

AI... Sigh. Who needs that 128-bit crap in era of online racing?

:)

Initially GT4 will not be online, so a good AI would be nice to have (at least for that version). In addtion who knows how when the online version will come out. Have Sony given hard dates on when the online version will be released? Even if they did/do, it's not like they ever miss those dates.

For starters, one that is aware of it's surroundings and re-acts accordingly (see Jedi2016's post above, he describes it brilliantly).

Hum, maybe someone who doesn't race online. ;)

I, personally, am not too sure about that fact. Something tells me that "Localisation" issues could also mean online play...

True, but it seems more than likely that if GT4 makes it's North American Q1 2005 release, that it'll more than likely have no online capabilities (again at least the North American version). Of course this too could change. Now if GT4 missed Q1 2005, then all bets are back on for online play. It could happen that if GT4 misses Q1 2005, that Sony may just say we'll hold it off until everything is ready and scrap the plan for releasing two versions... who knows.

What ever the out come of online play is, the fact remains that for many people AI is still very important (as demonstrated by most of the posters in this thread). That's why I disagreed with amar212 that PD should do nothing about improving the AI.

Didn't KY say something ambiguous like "The AI is at 5% of where I want it to be."

Not sure exactly what that means, because I'd imagine that KY has some pretty lofty ambitions for the game's AI.

Well, there's a difference between "agressive" and "stupid", and they may appear rather similar at first glance.

.......

I, for one, would LOVE to see this rectified in GT4 (as would everybody else, I think). But, since the game's not out yet, and the newest demo we have (the one Hyde mentioned) is probably over a month old already... there's just no telling.

Well said, totally agree, getting punted off the track from behind is/was one of the worst things in GT3, something that happened extremely rarely in my time on the track IRL.

Hi everyone!

Will the AI in GT4 be greatly improved from the previous GT games (the the previous GT games even have AI? )? I was a huge fan of GT 1 & 2, played them till no end. However, I did not purchased a PS2 and GT3 when I heard that the AI was still awful in GT3. So now, I'm thinking about finally buying a current generation console and wondering if GT4 will finally have a good AI system.

Played the tokyo gameshow demo, and if AI in the demo is going to be anything like the final version, then i am DEEPLY dissapointed, it is WEAK, it only sticks to the perfect racing line, it doesn't give you any room if you're next to an AI car (it WILL ram you off the track if you're next to it on a corner and you have the perfect racing line, always).

Weak AI sucks, specially since PD decided we can only play against AI. (you know, no multiplayer) i was afraid this might happen, but i'm not too surprised... this just means, that at least for me, the replay value of this game will not be so high.
i'll defenetly play it evry chance i get on LAN or Xkai (if it even works correctly). but seriously, setting up 6 players to play on LAN is something that can't be done very often.

with all these delays you'd think PD would add the one thing missing from GT4 (COMPETITION!). but i don't hope, even for a second that they will add online racing.

in the TGS demo it's really sad how easily you can beat the AI, but the real problem lies in the fact that the AI is... well, at this point, completley non exsistent.

The game plays like a gem, it shines like one too (looks awsome). but real competition to play against really, REALLY sucks, i hope that by the time GT5 ship, sony will get it's act together when it comes to online gaming, cause playing the "simulation mode" vs AI gets boring... fast.
but imagine how fun it would be clearing the entire simulation mode vs real people? (using a ranking system to keep things sort of fair).

this is the one thing where microsoft is actually beating sony at, and really good.
i really hope sony gets their act together, i don't want to have only one source for good online racing, consolewise.

Yeah, an MMO Racing Game. That would be pretty cool.
