I used to drive past these guys late at night and hurl abuse at them. I feel no guilt over that whatsoever.

Lust and murder in Albert Park
THE Save Albert Park movement in Melbourne has in recent years attracted some unusual folk. The Australian Grand Prix they are there to stop has been a huge success and the few remaining members of SAP are the subject of ridicule from most of the Melbourne population.

The movement will not be helped by news of a love affair which went wrong between two members of SAP which ended up with a murder.

Romance blossomed between two David Vance Mizon and Lucy May when they manned the barricades of Albert Park back in 1995. They broke up in 1997 but the relationship was rekindled in 1999, despite the fact the Mizon was living with someone else.

The Supreme Court in Melbourne heard this week that May became pregnant and in September 2000 Mizon tried to strangle May at her home in the south-east of Melbourne. He then stabbed her 16 times. He later returned to the scene to "discover the body" in an effort to create an alibi but police were suspicious that he did not call an ambulance and because he had cuts on his hand. Mizon denied the charges but was convicted of the crime in February and has now been given a 21-year jail sentence. Justice Bernard Bongiorno ordered that he serve a minimum of 17 years.

There are therefore two less protesters in the park...

Wow, that's really harsh dude. Even the most pittiful woman doesn't deserve to be stabbed to death - especially when she's pregnant.

But, on the bright side, after 17 years in jail I bet Mr Mizon will be able to pass a bowling ball without a strain! (: (that's a nasty mental image)

That's very sad, but why were they ever protesting the GP in the first place? :reallyodd

I bet it has something to do with running automobile races in a public park. A disgrace to the neighborhood or something ... maybe they just don't like fast cars. (:

Well, the park is in an interesting area of Melbourne. Albert Park and Middle Park sit next to the park that hosts the GP, plus St Kilda's next door.

Albert Park and Middle Park are quite affluent suburbs, and St Kilda although improving is still a little bit feral - consequently you've got a high rate of NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) in there who would complain about anything. They've pulled a couple of stunts but they're become increasingly irrelevant.

Apart from the couple meeting at SAP there was other connection between the protest group and the murder. The guy killed her (she was his mistress) because the pregnancy threatened his lifestyle. Nice guy.

Yeah, murderers can't go around having kids, you know ... too much "baggage".

If they're concerned about the flocks of people that come to watch such an event, and all the havock it wreacks on the sorounding area, they need to witness a college football game in Little Rock, Arkansas. The idiots that built the stadium didn't build enough parking for 10% of the stadium's capacity so the fans end up parking 5 to 8 streets deep into the sorounding neighborhoods. The home owners just take it in stride and have started charging for parking. It's the American way ...

All the villagers at Silverstone do this too. :)

I'm caught in a mental bind between protecting the earth and enjoying fast cars...but I think the typical tree-hugger is usually someone who thinks society is wrong in some way, so they protest these things that make them feel superior to others. Some are positive people who have great hope for humanity, and yet others are just trying to be a negative influence to others (Nah, Nah! I'm right! You're wrong!)

These kind of negative people are really people-haters. And those are people who really don't respect Mother Nature, because by killing people, you're harming the very earth in which we came from.

Okay, I am getting a bit off-topic, but the whole Albert Park issue seems to be more of a suburbanite-related problem that afflicts their little community for 2 weeks a year; loud noise and crowds, but little do they realise the social and commercial gains from having an F1 race in their area. I know race tracks don't belong in every area of the world, but it's not as if they are running 24 hour races through their neighborhoods.

They also do this at the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis. I parked in someone's backyard myself, actually... :D

It seems to me that Grand Prix has been around for some time. Knowing that, why would you move to an area where it's held? I know I'm biased here...but I'd love to be able to lean out my bedroom window and watch the GP cars go by. But if you don't like that sort of thing....

I think a lot of people just complain. There's been a CART race not far from where I live for a number of years now. BUT, someone recently decided to build affluent housing in the general area, and the people who moved in quickly started complaining about the noise. They're quite a distance from the course, but they still see it fit to complain. I gather they don't like the air show, either.

Maybe I'm just too surprised at stuff like this. When I was a kid, my parents moved out to a rural area which happens to have a drag strip. On some Saturday nights in the summer, you could hear the roar of engines echoing through the woods (especially when they had jet cars). But the strip was here before they were. They knew it was there, still chose to move, so why complain?
