Title says it all, but I will explain.

I own a motel, any items left after checkout are considered ours. Obviously, high value items we hold for a couple weeks incase anyone comes back for them.

Back in february I had a guest who was living in a room for about 6 months. His rent was due, but no one heard from him. We put a lock on his door that needs a special key to remove and allow access to the doorknob/ lock.
We left his room as is for a week, unpaid, which we normally do not do.
After a week went by with no word from him we cleaned out his room. His clothes, toiletries, etc. went into the attic. He had a 46 inch dlp with a blown bulb and a slim ps3 with a few games and blu rays along with some various electronics.
I took all the electronics to my house and held onto them for two months. After that, I tossed them all except the tv and ps3. Waited another month and still never heard from him.
So 3 months go by and i plug the ps3 in for the first time and start looking through the game saves/pics and stuff on hard drive. Nothing to indicate a child owned or used it, some really , really bad hip hop, club pics and nothing of importance so I wiped it.
After I wiped the hdd I started letting my 8 yr old daughter use it but am afraid to log it onto the psn for fear that it may have been stolen prior to my acquisition of it. Iirc there was no psn ID on the system previously.

So, do I bite the bullet and hook it online and risk it being flagged as a stolen machine? Would I be liable for its theft even though I got it legally?
Or have I been worried about nothing for 10 months?

Thats a really interesting story. I really have no solution for you, other than to be careful. I don't think that hooking it up online could show that it is stolen, as Sony has enough other security and network issues to deal with right now that they would have an advanced feature like this. But I really don't know, so just be careful.

Does SONY even blacklist consoles as a way of permanently banning a user like Microsoft does for cheaters, modders, etc on X360?

Yeah, they have banned modded consoles in the past, not nearly as much as MS does though.

That's quite an interesting story though, but I wouldn't worry about it either. I doubt that Sony would really bother keeping a list of consoles reported stolen and using it's network to check for them, or even that they have the technology to do so. It's something that would be handled by local law enforcement.

Well see what happens then. If I get a knock on the door ill let you all know.
100% true story so I really shouldnt be worried about it but if you read my thread in opinions and current titled "my fight with the us govt" it may help everyone understand my reluctance.
And I want to say thanks for not accusing me of stealing it.

Rule of Thumb from Sony says that one PS3 system can only be linked to five PSN accounts. Any higher number of linked accounts will draw in for a ban (supposively, but I have yet to see this happen). Chances are that if the previous owner had a PSN account, it's probably going to expire from not getting used often. Just keep that in mind...

Good point in the multi account. I didnt even think of that one.
My main concern is serial number. It wouldnt be hard to have SN traceable when the system is online. I read about a year ago an xbox went missing in a house break, the thief logged into xboxlive and the console lit up red flags at microsoft. The guy got busted for iirc recieving stolen property.

Again, thanks for the advice. Will be updating the system tonight.

Where have you heard this? Are you sure you aren't confusing that with the old game sharing policy of downloading content from your PSN on 5 different PS3s.

On my old 60gig I had 7 or 8 different PSN's.

OP: You should be in the clear in the stolen issue.

I read the TOS and the Privacy Statement when I got my new PS3 slim (around October 9th), and it basically says the same thing, but I have yet to see this happen.

I also "snooped" around the PS3 "underground" forums and they mention things like this. Just saying, but I stay far away from that world... :scared:
