I don't, but the chip that is going to be used just started production, or is just about it.

PS3 isn't expected until 2005.

You mean the joint venture "Cell" processor, I didn't hear they started production already. Cool.

The PS3 will use something called "Blue Ray." It's a recordable/playback High-definition(HD) DVD based platform. The disc comes with a hard plastic squared shaped dust cover, sorry it's permanent, with a small window. No memory card is needed, you can save games straight to disc. A memory card stick will be available though, if you want to take a saved game to a friends house, with at least 128MB of space, with 512MB as a possibility. For HD you need at least ten times the space as a regular DVD based memory card. So, the old 8MB PS2 card will need to be 80MB to equal it's size on the PS3.

I found this for you, it's about Blue Ray. It's in German, but you can take it to www.altavista.com and get it translated.

I'd heard they'd built a factory specifically for building "The Cell" - but I didn't know it had started production either.

100GHz? Blimey... :D

Solid - Nice facts! :D

The cell chip is not to be exclusive to the PS3, Sony making it for many many other appliances, and electronic devices. It just happens that they will use it in the PS3 too.

I have an article note with Ken Kutaragi, the creator of PlayStation. He states the PS3 will be backwards compatible with both the PSOne and the PS2 through emulation. Not bad.

It willbe able to emulate the PS1 and 2 via a program, not hardware, thus proving it's power. Supposedly with other appliances in the house using CELL, you can controll them from the PS3 using a network deal.

Which other device need so much power?:odd:

PS3 console to be released in 2005

Japanese media reported on May 6th that the PS3 console is in development. The goal is to make new processor technology, called "grid" about 200x faster than current console technology. This is almost achieving their original goal of making the PS3 1000(!) times faster than the PS2. This goal was publically set by Mr Okamoto, the Senior VP and Chief Technical Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, at the 2002 Game Developers Conference in San Jose, California.

Heres something else

It has been reported that the Spring 2003 issue of the electronics trade magazine Electronic Design Chain contains some surprising news concerning the internal specification of the PlayStation 3.
The magazine features an article interviewing Ken Kutaragi (the creator of PlayStation). Apparantly, Kutaragi indicates that the final production of the Cell processor (originally thought to power the PS3) may not be ready until 2007.

The Cell processor, touted as a "supercomputer on a chip" is a joint venture between IBM, Sony, and Toshiba. The key to the Cell processor is its flexibility. The chip will not only be a powerhouse in the traditional area of heavy computation (required for graphics), but will also incorprate high bandwidth communications and the ability to run multiple devices. This communication strength allows for multiple Cell devices to be clustered together easily - thus allowing scalability for more complex tasks.

With Sony pushing for 2005/2006 for the PlayStation 3, the delay in the production of the Cell may have forced Sony to abondon it and consider other options.
