I just started doing this last week, at lunchtime on Tuesdays and Thursdays, just to give some upper body strength, bit of extra lung capacity and provide another low impact form of cardio exercise - plus I'm nursing a slight hamstring strain in my right leg from gardening (of all things - that'll teach me to protect my back!).
Man, it's really difficult! I've started on an interval basis, where I swim four laps (of a 25 metres pool, so it's 100m), walk four laps(through the water), swim four, and so on. I ran through this cycle 7 times yesterday, so swum 700 metres. I can already feel better muscle tone through my shoulders and pectorals (I do some bench presses and peck decks during my weight routines).
I come out of the pool feeling like someone's almost pulled my arms off. I was really surprised at how physically hard it is.
Does anyone else do this? How have you found it when starting out?
