Is anyone else homwschooled and how do you like it?

I personally like it alot no ******** That public school has :D

Home schooling should have taught you 'alot' is not a word, but two words: a lot. ;)

I do self-educate, does that count as home-schooling? I do it from the comfort of my living room table.

.... It seems that you need to go back to school again and work on the grammar a little bit more.

But then, don't you miss out on all the social interaction of other children/students of your own age group?

That's what I would have thought. Part of going to school is to learn how to socialise with others and deal with the routine of getting a 9-5 rhythm going to prep you for a working career.

Not to mention the interaction with authority and self discipline skills which schools are meant to promote.

I was in public school till 8th Grade and i do Socialize alot since i do live in a small town, but my English is bad since i do come from CA.

English is something that takes practice, even for natives to use it properly. It all comes with things like reading and even posting here to improve.

I don't mean to pry but is there a particular reason you are home schooled and don't attend a state/ private school?

^All languages have suffered due to SMS and internet. Hearing some german from the newer generation gives me shivers (bad ones)

Yeah, but you missing all the chicks, sports class with girls, awesome high school parties,....? ...

I would have missed so much awesome stuff if I hadn't gone into school....

But well, it's a problem that doesn't exist here as school is mandatory till 16/18 years... and public school here are not bad. If you get a good education at home that you couldn't get in school, then I guess the social part is a small burden to carry, that can be rectified in some way.

But other social interaction, like haveing a bad teacher, coworkers, students and dealing with it is something that comes in handy in later professional life

My wife and I have two kids that we have home schooled for the past two years. We have many reasons for why we do it, but the main one being that we do not want to send our kids to a school that teaches to a test and then cannot pass the test. The school district that our kids would be going to is more concerned on whether they have a state championship football team and getting college teams to play championship games in their stadium than teaching the kids basic materials.

Our kids get to learn so much more than they would in public school and they excel at what they are learning. My son, who should be in third grade by public school standards, is in 4th grade in many of his subjects. In public school he would be told to slow down so that he wouldn't leave the other kids behind. Ever since George W. Bush's "No Child Left Behind Act" was put into place the smarter kids in class seem to be the ones left behind. If you can do more why don't they let you? My daughter is caught up from what the public schools did to her. There was a lot of racism that she had to put up with when she was in 2nd and 3rd grade. (Background - I was in college at this point and the college was in a not-so-good part of town. Trust me being one of the only white kids in a 99.9% predominantly black school is very hard. She was told by teachers and staff that she didn't belong and that the school she was going to belonged to them and she needed to go somewhere else. Needless to say if she had problems with school work she didn't get any help.)

In defense of public schooling, there are a lot of good schools. There is a school district, very close to us, that is excellent. They always score high on the national tests and have always excelled at academics. Unfortunately, they are allowing kids out of district to enroll in that school, but I cannot afford to pay what they are wanting for that.

As for the social concerns, my children have more friends now than they did when they were in public school. There are coops that you can join and if you find the right group, there are people to support you.

Home schooling isn't for everyone, and I understand both sides (I was public schooled); but I don't like the stigma that all home schooling kids are not socialized and that they will not be able to function if the real world. Some home schooling parents, I admit, do shelter their kids way too much, but that is now more of the exception to the rule. You would be surprised how many people home school their kids now because of the state of the education system in this country. [/rant]

Sorry about the long rant.

Wow, this i agree.

If Bullying happens,The School cant do really anything nor do they care.

This was my case

I've been home-schooled since 2007. The main reason was that the teachers in my classes wouldn't listen and blame everything on me. Another major reason was that my sibling was being harassed by fellow schoolmates, and as I said before, the teachers didn't listen (yet they trusted those students, go figure).

I do have social anxiety issues, and it's so bad at this point that going back to a normal school is pretty much impossible, since my problems would only get worse.

I'm in a program that's called "homeschool", but it's a lot more like college. I have one class a week, I get and turn in my homework, and I'm on my merry way. I'm dual enrolled in the local high school too, for their awesome German teacher. I'm a bit of an introvert (bit's a bit... Well...) so I don't much care for having a lot of different people around me through the day. Plus I don't have to get up early.

EDIT: There never were issues with bullying in my case. It's just that in seventh grade, I managed 4 D's and 3 F's. This was quite concerning for my family, considering I'm pretty damn smart, or so they tell me. So they put me in this program, made some new best friends, and made straight A's.

The university I went to, being a Christian university, had a very high amount of home schooled students. Not only would you not be able to tell that a lot of them were home schooled (and I mean that they way some people think home school kids are sheltered and introverted) but they were extremely smart...something that probably would not happen if they were in public school....this they admitted.

I agree

Who homeschooled you in English? The wall unit?

Canada? California? What is CA?

I was home schooled for my early years but spent some time in public school. High school was a private prep school that pretty much dominated any homeschooling efforts I've seen. Most notably in regards to using the English language.

One interesting phenomena I've noticed with many home school students is they some how assume they are more intelligent than their enrolled counterparts. And/or have far too much religious bias in their education.

How does coming from Canada make you have bad English? They both teach French and English at the same level, as I understand it.

There are parts of Quebec where French is spoken but not English, thus the requirement for virtually everything to be bi-lingual there.

First Nation'er?

I've yet to meet a First Nation/Native American that doesn't speak English as their primary language.

I was lucky enough to be able to enroll in quite a good district. The Livonia Public School system here in Michigan is top notch. I was lucky enough to take multiple Career center classes there.

While in Engineering & Design class senior year, I met this incredibly smart home schooled kid. He was very, very shy, but he was a good kid. He was one of the best kids in class and he was always quiet ( I admire that because I never shut up ). I think he has quite a bright future ahead of him.

There are also cases I've personally seen where the kids become 🤬. This kid I know, he thinks he is the smartest person on the planet. He says because he isn't a moron like high school kids because his parents are teachers. All he ever does is play call of duty and sleep. He is a worthless, pampered rich kid. He got so angry at me because he got a 18 on his ACT saying it was worthless.

It can go either way. It depends on the school. It depends on the parents, and most importantly, the student.

Both my parents are teachers, one still is. Didn't stop me from going to a comprehensive school and becoming public school enemy #1.

I was home schooled since the 1st grade. Like you, I liked it a lot. I had a ton of friends both home schooled and from the public schools. I've been to two colleges now, and I must say that the independence and time management skills that homeschooling granted me definitely helped when it came time to transition into college. So far then, no regrets.

I was homeschooled a few years ago when I just started High School. The reason for this is that I was being very viscously bullied and we were advised it was best if I stayed away from school altogether, for my own safety.

To be honest, I liked it a lot, I could drink when I wanted, eat when I wanted, and do math while chilling on the couch watching TV. It was awesome, really awesome. The parents set me a few tasks before heading off to work. And because I was in the comfort of my own home, I felt I was actually learning something. As I had the peace of mind and the biscuit jar to keep me chill.

I've been back at school for 3 years now, I'm at a better school. The bullying is still bad, but as there doesn't appear to be any form of physical hate, its all good. Still, I'm much taller and have more bulk than any of the kids who stand me down. But, I don't really want to scoop to their level, so I just ignore it.
