First thing you'll need if you wish to softmod your xbox
Action replay xbox, which I found on ebay in plenty
One of the three games which you use a special gamesave which exploits your xbox software, acting like a regular gamesave (loading it of course to the xbox and loading it in-game)
Mechassault 1 (What I used)
007 Agent Under Fire
Splinter Cell
Then you use your Action replay software on the computer and download the gamesave from the computer to the memory card. (Link with tutorial at the bottom with full explanation)
Then when it's all done your xbox will look something like this
There are a number of things you can do now with your xbox. You can hook up an ethernet cable to a HUB to your computer and transfer files to and from your xbox. You can store a number of cool tools and etc. on your HDD. (e.g. a game that you OWN you can install on the HDD and run it off the HDD)
But one of the coolest things you can do is emulate old games. For example I love Atari 2600 games and playing it on the xbox is a breeze.
Oh if you get an xbox USB hookup you can hook up an infrared something or other and even a keyboard for old computer games (think like Commodore 64)
I have also found in homebrew scene games like Super Mario War, Doom, and other games like Breakout and Connect 4.
I have had no trouble doing all this but I am not to be held responsible if something goes haywire on your xbox. You will also need an up-to-date standard dash (5960). Xbox's are only like 50 bucks at gamestop (but make sure it has either a Phillips or Samsung DVD drive, Thomson is no good) so I see this as a worthwhile investment for all sorts of possibilities.
Enjoy!
