I've been noticing screen tear seemingly getting worse and worse in the last few updates. It got real bad after the patch that came before 2.00. Well........I just completely cured it and I now get absolutely no screen tear at all now.

With the new update adding so much hidden stuff and I wanted to see if there were any new specific sound adjustment I was going through the menus. And I noticed something in my display options. I hadn't even looked at this option since launch. And back at launch before I even played the game I went through the options and I had turned OFF flicker reduction. I don't remember which I set it to, normal or sharpen, but launch day I know I specifically thought I don't need flicker reduction.

Well today I noticed it was back on. So I'm thinking one of the updates set that setting to flicker reduction by default. Well when I saw that I didn't even set it to normal, I set it directly to sharpen, just to see if I noticed any diference in visuals, I wasn't even thinking about screen tear. Well since I set that I have had absolutely ZERO screen tearing. Nothing noticable anyway. And I was getting it bad every time I took a corner, especially if I hit the rumble strips.

So to anyone getting the screen tearing, check that setting in display options, and set it to sharpen and see if that doesn't cure your screen tearing. It worked miracles for me.

I think i noticed some yesterday for the first time ever since playing GT5. Will mosey through the options next time i play. :)

Sharpen and flicker reduction is for SDTV only!
It will make no difference at all on a HDTV!

Screen tear is still present but it is far less now than it used to be, they have probably let the game drop more frames now though!

25 secs on the video is a good example of tearing.

I find screen tear happens for me only in cockpit view - just like in the youtube vid above - and when I'm going round corners, never on the straight.

I only get it when the framerate drops, specifically on city tracks where allot of things are on screen. I cant say i have noticed a huge leap in occurances since the latest update, I will however keep an eye out just incase.

It's more of a placebo effect, it's always been there with no difference since day one like the shadows but noticing it depends on how focused you are on the race, what view you're using, number of cars on track, weather condition etc.

It's not something they'll fix with a simple patch or you can change with an option on the menus, they need to optimise the game engine more or start reducing the strain on the hardware to get Vsynced 60fps gameplay which seems very unlikely.

I used to be getting a lot, then my PS3 died. :( But my new slim has been relatively good (not much tearing) :D

One fundamental flaw about all those threads where people state this or that about their game performance, be it graphics or sound, is that no one cares to share the setup they're playing on. Is it a LCD? A plasma? Refresh rate? Slim or fat PS3? HDMI?

Therefore, it's hard to understand what can help from what can not.

Didnt really notice it until someone showed me what it was.
I wasnt getting it much until I started moving my ps3 from tv to tv.

Hi phil, flicker reduction option in GT5 does affect HDTV.
When set to Normal, GT5 uses temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) and thus can create flicker on edges (some may see that easily, some not, depends on individual), Flicker Reduction just disable TAA. I remember some discussion on beyond3D about this http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?p=1498120#post1498120

But this settings shouldn't affect screen tearing, for sure.

I get it quite often on any track and usually bumper cam. I thought it was my TV setup since I never noticed it on my CRT TV only since I got a new 240Hz LCD with HDMI. Oh well I can live with it.

New ps3 slim, Sony LCD TV. Tons of tearing in any view, mostly city tracks but present in all tracks. It has never bothered me in any game so much for some reason.

Thanks novcze, interesting, with flicker reduction disabling TAA that could free up extra resources and help cut down on engine stress?!
I will compare different modes when I am on it next.👍

Tearing does not depend on display.

Neither the shadows, but some people found that the smoothing option of some TVs can help a lot without affecting overall quality.

What I'm trying to say is that the more data we have compiled, the faster we can understand why some people rarely see screen tear. Is it because of high refresh rates? Because they're in 720p? In SD sets? Or just their visual perception?

Hopefully this kind of data will lead is somewhere.

=)

just out of curiosity what size do you have gt displaying at in the options. I just switched to 100percent even tho it cuts a tad off the edges but i think the tearing has diminished
