I'm going to university in September, and I'm looking for a laptop. I've been looking into the Lenovo Ideapad Y580 and it seems like the best option for me.

I'm looking at the one here that's on for $1039, with 500GB hard drive, 15.6" HD screen, a good graphics card for the gaming I'll want to do (Diablo 3, WoW, potentially Starcraft, and perhaps some shooters), 8GB or RAM, a Blu-Ray drive, it just seems like a lot of kit for the price.

I'll be using the laptop for school, but that won't be very intensive, just Microsoft Office. While I'm there, I'll want to do some gaming too, and probably will output onto my TV I'm bringing with me (won't use it as a primary DVD/Blu-Ray player though, my PS3 will fill that role). I'm ready to pull the trigger, but I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to computers, so I'm hoping someone can give me some input, thanks!

There decent laptops. I had one a while back. I can say from personal experience there pretty good. So I would recommend you go and get it.

Yeah, $829 for it with a DVD drive and a 1344x768 res screen, or $1029 for a blu ray drive (DVD burner that reads BD) and a 1920x1080 screen.

The screen is tempting, but I'm not sure I'd even notice a difference at that size. I have a hard time telling between 720p and 1080p on 50" TV's  There's also that I can do 1TB at $879 I think.

Lenovo do often seem to offer deals on laptops.

I've checked out the Canadian Lenovo website and its a bit odd but almost all the laptops are Intel only, none are showing any AMD A4/6/8 series which is recognised as one of the better chips for integrated CPU and GPU to enable video, gaming and multimedia.

Slightly surprised about that.

Lenovo are good laptops, sturdy builds on the equipment they run.

Only gripes would be the weight and bulkiness of them. I've seen ones recently that from the outside look like they are from 1995 but once you open it and see a Windows 7 sticker + and i3 processor lol.
