Anyone have any idea what this is?

Sorry for the terrible thread title, but I can't think of anything better.

Anyway, we're currently getting the kitchen re-done and my parents are clearing out the alcove to wallpaper it. They've come across a gift they got a while ago from a friend of the family and none of us are sure exactly what it is. It's been a long period of time since we got it, so we don't want to phone the person who gave us it and ask (might seem rude we're only getting round to looking at it now). The only somewhat sensible suggestion any of us have is that it's some kind of hair clasp or something. Here are some pics (excuse the shoddy camera work, but I'm not great wuth cameras).




There is a removable wooden pin "through" the grasshopper's side. The wooden pin is roughly 4 inches long. The grasshopper is roughly 5 inches long (minus the antenna) and 1.5 inches wide.

So, does anyone have any idea what it is exactly or have any suggestions for what it could be used for? Any input appreciated, thanks :)
 
Looks like a paper towel rack, depending on the size.....other than that---you got me.
 
Can you rub the stick on it? It might make a noise that's supposed to sound like a grasshopper.

That's exactly what it is.

Take the stick out and rub it on the back and it'll make a cicada sound. Sort of.

My brother has one he brought back from Malaysia, though it's a toad.

Maybe you're supposed to put your pencil in the hole, so maybe it's a pencil-holder? That's my conclusion anyway, after looking at it for 60 seconds at 7:30am before going to work...

It's hollower. More hollow. Whatever.

So the note is deeper.
 
I've seen those toads on a market not far from here. The sound is different because the toads are hollow and more round.

You mean its not a grasshopper voodoo doll?
 
Try rubbing it super fast. It might make that higher-pitched noise more like the true sound.
 
But then it might go up in flames :lol:

...But, what could be more spectacular than a flaming grasshopper? Lol.

Maybe its just that easter is soon but i woulda sworn that was chocolate :P take a bite and find out!
