The [SEARCH]Aptera[/SEARCH] prototype, which is over halfway to completion, will go for up to 330 miles on a gallon of gas thanks to an aerodynamic design and the lightweight composites that make up the chassis.

They say that it is going to cost about 20K. This 2-seater concept has a computer limited top speed of 95mph and a 0-60 in 11sec.

The idea of a super lightweight ain't new. But the claim is certainly something.

I don't doubt a car like that could do it, though... Caterham just did 131.6 (UK) mpg on a mileage challenge earlier this year with a 1.6 SV. That's 109 (US) mpg. With better aerodynamics, an all composite body and a much smaller engine, even a non-hybrid gas car could be pushing 300 mpg.

The design, even though aerodynamically-efficient, doesn't look like it will make it into production,

It looks very unsafe and cramped. I wonder what the crash rating would be, probably even lower than a car from Hyundai or Daewoo! Also, fuel prices haven't risen a great deal during the past six months. Anyway, if I was going for fuel economy, then I would choose a Toyota Prius or one of those tiny 1980's Japanese vehicles.

The design of the vehicle reminds me of another three-wheeler fuel-efficient car...

C'mon...don't tell me we're still in the stone age!

Hyundai-bashing is pretty unwarranted these days. The Sonata, Elantra & the Granduer (Azera) are quite good cars. They might not be as accomplished as the Japanese in some areas, but to say they're unsafe is, um, stupid.

The older cars are a mess, obvoiusly.
