Untill recent I was a gaming journalisst, and today I just do some editoring in Croatian biggest gaming magazine, GamePlay (you can check the beta version of our site at www.gameplay.hr. Guess you won't understand much cause it's fully on Croatian, but nevermind :)).

During our visit to an 2001 E3 exhibition (the biggest gaming show in the world which is annualy held in Los Angeles) I had a chance to be among the lucky bastards who had a chance to lay their hands onto first Project Gotham Racing for Xbox.

I had an interview with a guy from Bizzare Creatins, and my second question was "How didi you get Ferrari licence?". I knew that EA had an exclusive rights for usage of Ferrari in video-games and that nobody else is allowed to have Ferrari's in their games (besides the special contract that is exclusivilly held by SEGA's famous AM2 studious, thanks to an genious Yu Suzuki and his admirable work on the F355 Challenge game which is adored by all the Ferrari. Dozens of Ferrari owners around the world and even Rubens Barichello has an F355 arrcade cabinets in their homes, and some of them even have a full 8 cabinet setting which was worth like 280 000$ when new. Today, AM2 is usinng their rights in Outrun 2 game which is the only game in the world marked as "Official Ferrari Product"). The guy form BC smiled, and answered it quite simply: "With lot of money. We thought that having a Ferrari would do a lot foor the game in the market, and Microsoft payed for that".

That's the whole story.

Sony arnt exactly short of cash, surely they could splash out. Tight fisted bastards. :trouble:
Two good reason why Sony wont pay for any license are; Sony doesn't want to give money to someone they're in competition with, and paying for licenses will mean there would be a financial reason for game companies to start licensing everything else. By not paying, there would be no reason for other game companies to seek licenses on their own, which would make life much easier for Sony, as well as other game companies.

I think that EA still hold the licence for most of the Ferrari range, however they will allow 3rd parties to use it in a game if the money is right.

Take a look at the box for Driving emotion-s (just look at the box, for gods sake don't buy it), you will see ea's logo with info that the Ferrari models in the game are licenced through EA. Basicaly Squaresoft did a Microsoft and threw enough money at EA, did do them much good in the sales department however.

uhh me. Liscensing is all such BS anyway, I wish GT3 had Ferrari Koenigsegg, Lamborghini, Porsche, BMW M series etc etc.

Scaff, Driving Emotion is one of my driving favorites - it's hard as hell but once you got to knew psyhic model ,that game rocked.

Maybe not an real simulation, but a worthy game no doubt. Very hard and very time consuming and it had a severre-mind-braking-difficult handling model and nice in-car view - I really loved the time spent on that game. The only thing that was missing was support for the force feedback wheel which is understandable - the game was released a year before the first GT Force.

I was hoping for the sequel, but Square never manage to do it.
