Francois Delecour's co-driver Daniel Grataloup has had a comfortable night in hospital in Perth following their massive crash on Day One of Rally Australia and the Frenchman is expected to be moved from the Intensive Care Unit to a ward later today.
Following further examination, including a CT scan, Grataloup is confirmed to have fractured his pelvis, right leg, two posterior ribs, shoulder blade and thoracic vertebra, along with a small fracture to the base of his skull. In addition, he has bruising of the lungs and a wound in his right groin.
"Daniel's injuries are not as serious as we initially thought, although obviously he is in pain from a number of smaller injuries," commented Team Doctor Paul Trafford. "He is comfortable, his condition is stable and hopefully he'll be moved onto a ward later today. He has spoken to his wife who is reassured of his condition and, as is so typical of Daniel, he is in good spirits and laughing with the doctors and nurses."
Commenting on their stage seven accident, Daniel said: "Last year when we had the accident I was unconscious so I didn't know what was happening, but this time I saw everything. We were going so fast, about 160 kph, and we hit a very big tree and I knew the car was going to be bad. When we stopped I couldn't speak and François was slumped in the seat next to me; I thought my injuries would be worse than they are. I'd obviously like to thank everyone who helped us."
from wrc.com, glad to hear Grataloup is doing relatively good, considering the force of the impact (yes, that's the engine sitting in front of the car!
in related news, Grunholm won yet again, Rovenpera and Sollberg top out the podium. Makinen (4th) is excluded because the Impreza was under the minimum weight requirements, which moves Sainz to 4th.
