This morning, Apple released something magical for us Intel Mac users. It released a Public Beta for Boot Camp, an official program for allowing you to dual boot with Windows XP and OSX on the same machine.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

This is amazing. The people who originally found the method to dual booting got $13k for doing something that apple was gonna do down the line! I'm very excited for this, I am going to try it out after lunch! :D

Wow, pretty interesting. Is this a similar concept as running OSX with 'classic' mode - or just another Virtual PC style emulation?

Unfortunately I have Motorola processors in my G4, no Bootcamp for me. :( It would have been cool to see how this hardware stacks up against my other intel based machines.

Let us know what you think.....

This opens up a whole load of new possibilities…

Now you can do all the things Windows can on ya’ Mac, oh and that includes getting viruses, trojans, adware, spyware, malware and whatever other underwear you’re got handy.

It'd be nice to hear how it goes Event :)👍

I've been looking to replace my aging imac at home, but my better half could do with a PC for her work (i would also find a PC handy for all those great PC only racing sims) - Now i think my problem's solved! 👍

This is awesome. I don't have an Intel Mac (and it will be over a year before I get one) but fact that Apple is doing this opens up the possibilities. One downside that I can think of: Some of our software may not be available for much longer if you can just boot up windows and use the windows version instead. I hope this will not be the case but its certainly possible.

Best of both worlds... definitely! But to be fair, Apple bundles their wired keyboards with the multi-button mighty mouse, (Wireless still only has one-click though) and Windows XP is pretty stable... BSOD's are really rare (unike my win98 :scared: )

no, this is full fledged dual booting and choose OSX or Windows XP. It's not emulation. The only thing it emulates is the BIOS.

I'm pissed that I can't get it working.... Says partition verification failed.

Make sure OS X is up to date 10.4.6... good luck with this and keep us informed with the progress:tup:

HMMMM..... SO....... whos's now going to by a PC! when you can have the looks of a mac with all the functionality of windows... this is indeed apple's secret weapon and will probably see their market share sore!

Well, I got it up and running, it's installing drivers now.

I never thought I'd see the day... I'm glad I didn't have to wait months for the genius open source people get the X1600 drivers working, I did not expect this at ALL!

Why would you run XP on a Mac? So you can pay extra for hardware to run the same OS?

I suppose it is convenient for Mac users, if then need XP software, but dual-booting is a pain and 90% of the time you are only going to use one OS anyways.

So what's to stop us from loading OSX on our XP machines that are Intel based? :o I know, it's thought provoking.

Nothing, but Apple shut down the websites/groups promoting instructions to do this.

I believe they were (illegally) using developer builds of OSX that did not contain hardware checks to ensure OSX is running on Apple hardware. I think there are some poeple here who have done it, actually.

Actually, if you think about it, a 17 inch Intel Mac is not that much more expensive than a PC. For $1299 ($1199 if you have a student ID), you can have a Intel D processor, 160GB harddrive, 512 RAM (Upgradeable to 1GB for $100 and 2GB for $300), Mac keyboard and Mighty mouse, Dual-layer SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD+RW /CD-RW), and built in wireless internet and Bluetooth 2.0.

A PC with comparable performace would be around $900, like this one from Newegg, but without a screen. Add another $300 to that for a quality 17 inch LCD, and it comes to $1200. For just $100 dollar more, you get a prettier, more ergonomic iMac with a lot more features and the ability to boot from a Macintosh or a Windows operating system.

Good deal? I'd think so.

But Windows.
On A Mac.

Thats the only reason im buying a 20" MacTel lappy at the end of the summer.
And once i buy it, Bye OSX (Well once i find a reliable osx86 image for my current lappy that is), Hello Windows on a Mac.

I suppose it's a good deal for your "average" person. But then again your average person is not going to think of going to Apple if they are looking for a Windows machine.

A power user, on the other hand, would be much better served by the IBM-compatible system because it is much more readily upgradable (video card, memory, and anything else). With the iMac you are locked into the same monitor, CPU, video card unless you dish out whatever they are currently charging for the whole system...which really sucks.

http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/05/alienware-area-51-5400-all-in-one-pc/

Everyone always compares the price of iMacs to that of a Dell with comparable specs but with a separate monitor and tower. I think this is a better comparison since both computers are all-in-one with comparable specs.

Alienware is due to announce this one sometime on Thursday, so we don't have a lot of details yet. But we can tell you that it's an all-in-one PC with a 17-inch widescreen LCD display, Bluetooth keyboard, maximum 2GB RAM, integrated camera (guess how we figured that one out!), maximum 160GB hard drive and will sell for "under $2,000." Which, at least for Alienware, makes this a budget system.

Yes the Dell is a better deal, but its not a fair comparison.

I have to say, this is the fastest Windows experience I have ever encountered. I can't wait till my extra gig of RAM comes! This core duo is fantastic!

So, worked without a hitch? :) Great!

Can’t wait for my own MacBook Pro…

Sweet.

Considering the hardware is exactly the same, Apple just does a really nice job with the outer shell and what's not, I would definitely consider an Apple.

But what I'd really like to see is Apple release a mainstream edition of OSX for PC users; I believe that if they offered for a decent price, they'd actually be able to sell quite a few coppies.

And at the same time, they’d be killing themselves. The single worst time during Apple’s 30-year history was when they licensed out their operating system in the mid ’90s to the clone manufacturers – and one of Jobs’s best moves was to kill the clone program. Apple is a hardware company – the Operating System is what sells the computers, but the hardware is where they make their money.

Cool. Now you can catch viruses through windows and have them ruin your mac OS too. Lol.

The only good thing this would be for is running games, I suppose. I don't see why anyone would want "windows functionality" (hello, oxymoron!) when they already have a macintosh.

You guys think they'll open something up for Linux? I also wonder if Mac will do anything with the Cell, that is, if they let IBM back into the game (after selling out to microsoft's x360).

Steve Jobs is doing a pretty good job, I must say.

Wow, heard about this last night... Super great news and really unexpected!
Pity I have a G4 Mac... I can feel some intel core duo coming on...

EVENT! (excuse the shouting, I'm excited): How does it run games?

What's the deal with getting updated graphics drivers etc from ATi and new direct X releases from MS? Or do you have to just use the more specifically Maccy driver stuff that Boot Camp creates? Basically how seamlessly does Windows handle the hardware? Do games look the same as on PC? I mean, do new games that use fancy directX features look right, run fast etc?

If it CAN indeed run games in a fast and stable way the same as on a Wintel box (wait it IS a Wintel box - I mean... as on a regular PC), there is no reason at all to have a PC, as I can imagine most non-3D accelerated software that doesn't really push the hardware will work just fine, like business software, CAD etc.

At least you can still use iTunes when you're using Windows (har har har)! This is why there is a PC version in the first place  /jk

It's the graphics card that's letting it down. Wonder what it'll look like on an iMac with a (proper) 256mb X1600 :D.

Apparently F.E.A.R. and HL2 run at full settings in a nice smooth playable fashion on the MacBook Pro (and assuming the iMacs and to-be-released PowerMacs (or whatever they'll be re-branded as) will be even faster). According to the comments in this http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/05/mossberg-goes-to-boot-camp-and-survives-unscathed/ article anyway.

I'm really thinking of ditching the PC AND the G4 Mac... :dopey:

I'd wait for a bit before getting a Mac (ie. more confirmation that everything works fine)...I'm still on a PC!

This looks great! The only thing that's been holding me back from a mac is that i might find half of my programs don't work.

It's a shame i haven't got a non-compaq or acer registered copy of XP. That and i don't have any cash at the moment...
