Well I know that they are going to be expensive, but I still would love to own one for my little brother and friends, but is there a way to actually accuire an Arcade Machine?? say like "Hydro Thunder"..."Sega Rally" and so forth? I'm just curious as to where I can purchase or lease one of these machines.

if you were in the uk i know just the place to send you. but seeing as you're in the states......sorry dude:guilty:

Yep, it's possible to own one. There are a few Hydro Thunders for sale in California right now, if you go use this search engine at NamcoArcade.com. The going rate seems to be $1895, but I'm not sure if that's a single machine or a twin (IIRC, the two-player setups are two singles hooked together with an ethernet cable). I don't see any Sega Rallies there, but there might be some in neighboring states if you're willing to look that far. Sega Rally would likely be cheaper, because it's a few years older. :)

If and when you do get a machine, you'll have to take care of a few things -- you might want to rig up a simple button to ring credits, or you could force your friends and family to dump quarters into it.

You'll also want to take better care of it than you would a simple console machine, because arcade cabinets aren't as fool-proof as console machines; they're more like big, wooden PCs. So, that means regular dusting and cleaning. You'll also eventually have to replace things like button switches, and light bulbs...farther down the road, bigger things like the potentiometers in the wheel/pedals/throttle-stick, or the monitor board, or the monitor itself may fail, and those will need to be replaced, but if you keep up maintenance and/or don't use the machine very often, they shouldn't be a problem. :)

By the way, in case you're wondering how I know all this stuff -- I work at an Arcade.

It is indeed easy - but why bother...?

Find a used arcade kabinet, install a PC with whatever cards needed, install the required version of Windows and use Mame ?.. All the recipes are on the net and Google is, again, your friend !....

Here's one you can use !...

MAME isn't so good when it comes to mid-90's-and-later 3D games like Hydro Thunder or Sega Rally, and he would have to rig up the wheel, pedals (in the case of Sega Rally) and/or throttle stick (in the case of Hydro Thunder).

I wonder if that isn't just a question of time... I've seen a couple of old arcade boxes inside in my life, and late 80s / early 90s boxes surely look like an investment would be a waste of time. Couple of the ones I've seen used old-as-dirt Laserdisc players as medium, and Lord knows they don't last....

And in 93% of the games I've played using Mame, control needed no tweaking. The ones that did, I couldn't be arsed dealing with...

Again, as in all posts, this is my experience and my opinions - Others with more patience may have all games working perfectly... or none at all........
