Arcade mode Free Run Menu Problem

This has happened to me three times in three days now: When selecting a track in Free Run the system freezes, or something freezes. I can't move back and forth through the tracks. In fact, the controller won't work at all. I have to turn the game off and start over, which really sucks if you've just beat a time and wanted to save it. I've had no other problems with the controller or the console, only this. It just started and seems to be happening all the time now. I'll be sure to start saving all the time, but has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone know what it might be or how to fix it?
 
I've never had it happen. I'd look for a tiny spot or scratch on the disc; it's probably crashing from trouble picking up the code from that particular sector. Good luck.
 
This happens, occasionally, if you're using the "quick menu" scroll... This is where, to go right on any game menu quickly, you hold D-pad right and A-stick left... Since I stopped doing that, it stopped freezing. But it only ever did it in Arcade, Free Run, Course Select - no other menu...
 
this has never happened to me with GT3 but it has happened with a few other games with my PS1 and PS2...funny how every game it has happened with have been second hand....oh sorry, i mean 'pre-owned'

check the disk for scratches or even tiny areas where the reflective surface has peeled off....
 
I'll check it, but I really only play GT3 so the disk is almost never removed from the console. Since the PS2 is also my DVD player that's the only time I ever take it out. It may have a dog hair on it or something.
