Some of you may have seen the ads for large magnets that you sit on your oil filter. These magnets supposedly pick up metal particulates in the oil and hold them in the filter, lessening wear on the engine.

These magents retail for around $60-$70, and I don't see why I can't just pick up a really powerful magnet (like a cow magnet) and a hose clamp (total cost <$10) and attach it to my filter. Would this work just as well, even though there is less contact between the filter body and the magent?

Has anyone tried this, and actually cut the filter open to see if it does anything? And even if it is picking up some amount of metal fragments, woudl these really have a very significant effect on engine wear?

If you have that kind of metal fragments in your oil, you've got bigger problems. But it sure couldn't hurt, I wouldn't think, especially if you go the cheap route instead of getting the same thing with a fancy label on it for $50 more.

Most of all cars that I know of have a magnet manufactured in the bottom of the oil pan. My car (91 Talon) the oil pan drain plug is a magnet as well.

You won't have metal in the oil(big enough to do damage).

If there is, ur engine's dead anyway with or witout the magnet.

Just a dam marketing gimmick. 👎
