Due to the questionaire linked to in this thread I am making this poll using this question:

Are movies based on video games better than video games based on movies?

Personally I have a really hard time answering this question. The quick examples that I came up with are Matrix (movie then game), and Tomb Raider (game then movie).

Why?

Originality dominates. They both suck.

Movies based on video games (Doom, Super Mario Brothers, etc...) for the most part, suck. Games based on movies (Superman 64, The Hulk, Van Helsing, etc...), for the most part, suck.

Scenario for movies are made for movies only (there is some exceptions). Scenario for games are made for games only (again some exceptions). So we can't get a good game/movie by simply modifying some things there and there to make a good game/movie. They are 2 different things. It's like trying to screw a star shaped screw with a square shaped screwdriver.

Movies into games.

Die hard trilogy, the first one, on Ps1 was sensational.
Spiderman wasnt too bad.
Superman looks ace.
Theres so many good and bad ones.

Movies based on games.... just, (i couldnt vote "i like cheese" because then i would be lieing.)

I think turning movies into games is more generally successful (Matrix, Star Wars, 007, Spiderman).

I voted for cheese, because movie-based games and game-based movies both suck out loud.

Mmm...cheese.

Both mostly suck anyway.

It's true. I see this thread as more of a death by burning vs. death by freezing thread. Obviously one chooses freezing because it's better than burning - but either one is no good.

Cheese is good though.

How the hell could I say no to cheese...

GT_Fan..Your avatar makes me laugh out loud at its wrongness.

I could eat extra sharp cheddar for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Cheese pwns movie/games and game/movies!!!!

I actually do like cheese. But yeah, I lean towards the majority vote here, neither are really any good.

Of the two, I'd have to lean towards "games based on movies, suck less"

Agreed. All games based on movies suck. And all movies based on games suck.
I see this sentiment echo'd through out, and it leaves me wondering, Has there been a movie based on a game or a game based on a movie, that didn't suck?

Just wondering.

Movies: Street fighter, blew. Super Mario Bros., blew.

Games: Hulk, blew. Matrix was, meh.

I can't come up with a good one, at all.

The orginal Die hard Trilogy was meant to be pretty good for it's time, thats about it, though I can't say from experience, I never played more than the demo.

King Kong is actually a pretty good game, and its actually good knowing Peter Jackson and his special effects crew helped make the game with the creator of Beyond Good & Evil.

I've not played King Kong at all but yeah, thats had decent reviews.

Ok, good games based on movies:

Star Wars - Jedi Knight 2
Brothers in Arms (obviously based on the Band of Brothers series)
Matrix (popular games, though I never played any of them)
007 Goldeneye (good FPS for its time)
Donkey Kong (based loosely on King Kong right?)

Ok, good movies based on games:
Tomb Raider... wait no. Bad example
Resident Evil... wait no... um
Mari...
Doom... nope.

... hmmm not coming up with any.

Good? Just good? That game was probably the best FPS ever, after Perfect Dark. Just my opinion, though. Goldeneye was a good game as well as movie(s).

25 people like cheese! (including me)

And yes, games based on movies suck, so do movies based on games.

I agree ... most movie based games are crap! .. and vice versa :)

I do have a PS1 game in mind that was probably inspired by the movie of the same name (without being an identical story), and both in my opinion are worthy of a mention

The Driver ( 1978 getaway car chase movie with Ryan O'Neal )
Driver ( PS1 classic game with the unforgetable Presidents Run )

I couldn't name many more tbh ... It's quite the challenge finding a set worthy of mentioning :dopey:
