xbox?, my pc you mean?
More about the online gaming, kindoff 'games you enjoyed' but different.

I've read the complaints, but i'm not impressed.
I've read the excuses(it's a demo etc) , i'm not impressed.

What i've not heard anyone complain about is lag:

That doesn't mean noone complained about it, i just didn't read any and to me that makes perfect sense because:
I can only speak for myself when i say i have a really hard time finding traces of lag. One of the biggest spoilers in online gaming has to be lag (apart from the other annoyance 'other people' ;)
I've not suffered from lag at all, i've seen the weird starts that must be due to lag, but that has never influenced my games in a bad way.
I've seen others drive in front (or behind me) swivering from side to side creating asmokescreen, that obviously has to be lag and did influence my game (i cannot pass someone that takes the complete road, or sometimes took my chance passing only to find i should wait next time ;)) but still, the ones suffering from that lag, still seem to be quite fast around the track, they don't seem to notice going from side to side at all, that's a good thing.

Only 4 things keep online racing from going from 'great' to 'superb'.

- replays - with fwd/rwd and car selection (to look at the 'accident' from the 'suspects' view (perhaps he was 'punted' into punting you!))
- (private) rooms / editable races (laps/tyre wear/fuel)
- a tuned penalty system (i think it's quite good already, some improvements needed)
- a "race again" option at the end of a race for quick (re)matching.

Last thing, did anyone else do some races with what seemed to be 'grand-turismo_UK [UK]' or something, i was pretty far gone at the time, but i somehow had the feeling it was someone just hosting a game for the hosting of it ) or (s)he was driving in a rediculously underspec'ed car in the su'ka 750P.

I'll go to the other thread to complain about certain drivers now :)

I agree! I totally love online. I know it is a little rough around the edges but it has been a massive leap since the original JP version. Always a lot of fun, and I have only run into a handful of punters.

The thing that I must say I enjoy the most from basically any online game is the whole community part of it, nothing gets better than playin' with your friends I think that the online is not only prove that your better than any playerin the world, but really racing with your friends, it's like the tuner challenge, I must say that racing around in a Swift (which is epically slow) can be very fun if you do it with the proper people.

I wouldn't rate the online as a bad one, but it's lacking so much stuff, and I mean if we're already hosting a match how about giving us some options to what we would like to do in it. I could go on but then again it's not bad but it could be so much better with some little things.

^^ But we all know things will be greatly improved when the full version comes out and I don't think game customization will be available untill then, only simple private rooms. It can only get better from here.

I enjoy online now there seems to be more racers than punters. Again the thing that would make so much better is private rooms, race customization, voice chat. The list is longer but you get the general idea.

As for grand-turismo_UK [UK] I was in a couple of races with them. Red Integra at suzuka.
can't really comment on their driving ability. Apart from they dropped it in turn 1 in both races.:sly:

I think it's logical to assume that punters will decrease as the less skilled get bored crashing all the time and move on, leaving only the diehard driving fans online.

Here's hoping anyway.

Of course by this rationale, come full GT5 release we'll be back to punt city.

Please god, mohammed, vishnu, pd and anyone else who's listening - PRIVATE ROOMS!!!!!

I've found that as I've got accustomed to the pro physics and become a better/faster driver I'm enjoying on-line more - this is not neccessarily down to winning more (winning isn't that important to me as I have all the cars I want and 2 mill in credits), but more because as I've become a better driver I've discovered I can avoid the 'punters' and idiots most of the time by adjusting my driving line or braking points.

And I find the 600pp races much more involving than the 750pp.

Most of all, I enjoy finding myself towards the back of the start grid at Suzuka and working my way thorugh the field... I might not get up to 1st place, but getting a podium from the back of the grid is great fun.

Punters don't bother me... but the disconnectors are a another thing all together.

Glad to hear that more people are enjoying it. Makes me feel like giving it another go.

Thanks for the update :-)

It still frustrates me. All it takes is one bad driver to make you forget about the other nine good ones that you just raced against, hehe!

By and large though, the dorks are starting to fade, the kiddies are back to playing Mario Kart and I've come across a lot more serious people in the last week or two.

The online experience MUST only get better. The issues of lag I don't think are something that PD can address unless they switch the online to 720p and adjust track details to make the experience smoother. I don't mind a little less detail in the background, I'll gladly trade that for a smoother, less jumpy experience.

Heading into degna 2 just before it appeared that I shunted a guy off even though he was a good four carlengths in front of me. He was braking, I was coming out of Degna 1 and then I see 'POOOMBA!' He gets ghosted and shoved into the pit at high velocity even though he was under brakes. I stopped and let him past, even though I never touched him, but I bet from his perspective, it felt like shunting.

Invisible shunting? Yeah that's gotta be fixed surely. I don't want people thinking I rammed them even though I was a mere speck in the distance, hehe!

The lag isn't caused by the level of detail on the track, that's completely irrelevant. The lag happens because sometimes there's a delay between your opponents PS3 communicating car position to the Host and then the host relaying this info to you.

Rather than trying to predict the opponents position on your machine, based on his previous position and speed or overlaying AI (either of which method may or may not be practical or, indeed, any better) The GT5P netcode opts to ghost out the car on your screen and freeze its position until it receives a server update. usually this doesn't take long so the car just seems to jitter a bit from your POV but sometimes there's a big delay and that's when the warping happens.

My main problem with this is that it seems to unghost the car a little too soon and this can lead to those weird collisions. No doubt this is something PD will be looking to fix if and when they overhaul the netcode for an update or full release

Spot on, it's down to network latency. I've seen the same problems in Unreal Tournament. Perhaps having the option to use central servers would help a bit.

As it stands we're all at the mercy of each others connections!

well i think online definitely improved after they added the 600pp races,
u can just race lightly tuned stock cars in it,

anyone else miss the stock car race before the big update like me??

To stop the 'punters', there really needs to be damage, but it should be a lot more severe and performance limiting for the guy ramming, by making the front damage more painful, than the rear.
Rear damage could be mainly cosmetic, whereas front damage could damage steering, handling, engine etc.
There has to be an immediate penalty for rammers to serve as a credible deterrent.

I've had a thought, and I haven't seen anyone else mention this - maybe because it's already in the works and automatically assumed... But has anyone thought of damage costing credits to repair? For instance, you could charge a few thousand credits for each level of damage to your car, differing in expense depending on how "uber" the car is, and therefore wiping out the profit from the prize money.

Example: You come first in a race, you get 12000 credits. However, if you damage your car once, that will cost you 5000 or 6000 credits after the race has finished. Damage it twice, and it doubles. This should only apply to the front of the car as Gregz0r said, rear damage could cost a lot less. Hopefully, this would make people a bit more careful in driving cleanly. If some idiot decides "Oh, all I have to do is stop suddenly and damage the car behind me" then A. he'll be stopping and he'll probably lose the race and B. there could be a way of detecting that, out of the blue, he's braked and so no cost penalty will apply to the guy he's backed into.

This is all rough of course - I'm not thinking straight and I've got a splitting headache, so I hope you see what I mean! :D

Yes, I think you're standards are too low. GT5P Online is like a skeleton compared to 90% of the online racing games out there.

Depends on what realism you're after, damaging the rear of Porsche is going to do a lot more than the rear of a Aston Martin, so it would place those who drive Porsche's at an advantage.

Hmm...this idea i like. :)👍

What I mean is, if you damage the back of any car with your front end, then your damage will be much more severe, regardless of the cars involved. :)

Yeah, I know, I was just being a bit pedantic :O

So if I brake unexpectedly in front of you, your car gets all messed up and my car goes on its merry way? Great news for me if I'm a punter!

What about those times when somebody turns into you and you get a ramming penalty even though you were clearly the victim? Computers just aren't smart enough yet to sort out who did what to who. And any hard and fast rule can be taken advantage of.

I think we need replays for real people to examine to find out who is a problem and who is not. Then of course we need those promised "private rooms" to confine events to people who consistently prove themselves to be good racers.

I would love to see damage costs implemented. Making people pay for their damage will make them really be more careful, making people pay for OTHER people's damage received from you and you will do anything to avoid hitting another car as you slide off the course.
