Are we in the golden age of the 6cyl engine?

I guess you haven't had any experience with MODERN American engines. Old ones weren't exactly great but in the past couple of years American engines have gotten quite a bit better.

Certainly so. In my opinion, it often appears as though the Japanese (former dominator's of the V6 class) have hit a plateau of sorts with the technology, and while the Americans have been playing catch-up, they certainly have surpassed Toyota and Honda in some respects... Particularly making good amounts of power in a cheap, easy to run package.

The new Ford Duratec35 is awesome, GM's LY7 is quite good as well, and furthermore, Chrysler's update of their 3.5L unit has helped quite a bit.

*edit* Nevermind. I can't start arguing which 6cyl is better than the other.

The mighty "stovebolt" was a torque monster that GM didn't see the need to develop or give anything more than a monojet to, until the 290 horse 4.2 liter inline six in the trailblazer, which is apparently a direct descendant of the "Boat anchor" that I stupidly pulled out of my 60.

EDIT: Gaah! I didn't read the V6 only statement. Please ignore.
