War Movies and Westerns!
I can't seem to get enough of good Westerns, and movies about WWII.
Most of the GREAT westerns were made before I was born, but I find myself seeking them out.
Am I just old and need an easy to follow plot?
Do I just really dig how you can tell the good guy from the bad guy, and there are no "Dick Wolf" endings?

I don't know. But as I get older I find that I actually like John Wayne.
In my youth, only The Quiet Man. Now I watch The Searchers, The Shootist, Rio Bravo, Angel and the Badman, and The Sons of Katie Elder every time they come on.

Also, just about every WWII movie that comes on has my full attention.
I admit to not caring too much for Pearl Harbor.
I love Black Sheep Squadron, Midway, Sands of Iwo Jima, and so on.

Have I turned into an "old fart" that remembers (and long for) when times and people were "classier"?
Or have I become a simpleton?

Anyone else feel the same way?

Look, if there's someone out there that doesn't like "Sands of Iwo Jima" they're not young, they're just idiots.
 
I went out and bought "The Longest Day" not so long ago. And it came with "Tora Tora Tora" too. 👍

Old school war movies are brilliant, especially British ones like "The Battle of Britain". Stiff upper lip, what ho, old chap.

I watch tons of westerns, these days I am watching mostly the gritty 'spaghetti' westerns.
 
I think I know what he means. i think it's the need for "simpler times" as you get older. mine's leaning more toward the previous decade, the time of dictators and explorers and lon cheney/bela Lugosi horror movies!

Band of Brothers is awesome, should be in everyones DVD collection unless they cant stand war films / programs with a passion, or don't have a DVD collection.

I found myself oddly feeling an urge to buy westerns a couple of years back, I've already got plenty of war films, but I can't get enough of a good western. I had really high hopes for that 2'10 to Yuma, sadly it was crap. But films like Unforgiven and more recently I really enjoyed that Kevin Costner film Open Range. With war movies there's less of them that I can say that I really like, but the ones that I do like I enjoy a lot.

You must have been subjected to the remake of 3:10 to Yuma.
It was the complete "Hoover" of remakes, as it sucked mightily.
If you can find the original with Glen Ford, you will be much more pleased with the story. You got the "Gil Gaurantee" on it.👍

The remake is only the same in name. They changed a LOT, to modernize it. Enough of it is similar that you know that you're watching the "same" story. But they changed the "essence" of the story and FUBAR'd it.

I also recently picked up a three pack of Tom Selleck westerns that include Monte Walsh, Last Stand at Saber River, and Crossfire Trail.

Yeah, I've never seen the original 3'10 though I do want to see it sometime. The new one was just a tad rediculous in too many ways. But the Gil Gaurantee sounds like it's good for it's word 👍.
 
I fell asleep during the new 3:10 and never bothered to finish it (although I will say it looked gorgeous on Blu-Ray), but my wife, who isn't a fan of Westerns in the least, mentioned something about buying it... Strange.
 
I got the original quite by accident.
My wife bought it for my birthday or Father's day.
I then watched it, and said nothing.
One of my sons mentioned that it was in black and white, and "where the hell is Russell Crowe?"

So someone bought the remake.
As it saw it after I saw the original, I was less than impressed.

I've seen it once or twice, a brilliant look at another side in the "good war."

I guess as I've gotten older, my fondness for older movies in general has grown. Anything with Humphrey Bogart floats my boat if we're going to go back pretty far, of course there are the Steve McQueen films as well. I'm not a big fan of westerns, but I do love stories that are on a more epic scale. Hell, I'll admit it, I love the old musicals they used to do.

Its no surprise that TCM is one of my favorite channels here...
 
Steve McQueen was the glue that held the Magnificent Seven together.

He's also played several bounty hunters. Once in a series western, and a "modern day" bounty hunter in one of his movies from the '70's.
His "horse" was a 1954 Eldorado in that movie....but the essential "cowboyness" was still there.
 
Bit of an old thread, but oh well.

I've always liked John Wayne in pretty much everything post-Stagecoach, which is one of the best westerns of all time. I even liked him in McQ (ok, his black Mustang may have something to do with it :)).

Gil, seeing how you seem to like Wayne's films in which he plays what could possibly be described as an anti-hero, such as my favorite, The Searchers, I recommend The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance with Jimmy Stewart and True Grit, which won Wayne his only Oscar.
 
I've got The Man who Shot Liberty Valance. I thought it was bloody brilliant.
It was in a "twofer" with Shane.

I'm really still developing a taste for the Duke. Though the list of his movies that I like is growing.
I still watch The Quiet Man every time it comes on. (I really need to find myself a copy...)

Though no "horse opera" star, Spencer Tracy has also caught my eye as one of the "kings of cool".
I've watched a couple of James Dean movies and am wondering if there would have been as much hype surrounding him if he hadn't been killed?
 
I think almost everyone loves a good western or WW2 movie.

I mean good ones. I wish they still make westerns or WW2 movies but I haven't seen a good one come out for years.

btw: my dad took me to see 'Tora, Tora, Tora' when it originally released and it was sold out. Funny I would remember a thing like that but I was quite bitter about it. On sundays I watched that WWII tv series with Vic Morrow (name anyone?) ..and was also turned on by the vehicles in the Desert Rats tv show.

Nothing quite like a good western to keep me glued to the screen and in all fairness I still hold Clint as the best in westerns ;) from the Good the bad and the ugly to fist full of dollars and high plains drifter through to my fave western ever Unforgiven! Yep westerns are much better viewing than your average two bit action movie with CGI's to try and steal the show :p

Gimme Clints films any day of the week :cheers:
