Hey guys, I've recently been nagged by my parents to have them buy me a laptop so I will get off the home computer. Problem is, up until now I;ve had no idea what to buy. It has to kick ass in the multimedia department (bar PC gaming), it has to be portable (which is why it needs to be a notebook) and it has to have a good design (I.e., not a Lenovo, as they remind me of the dull technolgical bricks of the 90's). Luckily, I'm now down to two options (but any other highly-similar models would be welcome).

ASUS Lamborghini VX2S

Processor:Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz)
Memory:2GB DDR2 RAM
Storage:200GB HDD
Optical Drive:HDDVD & DVD-Burner (DL)
Screen:15.4inch WSXGA Crystal Brite
Video:512MB nVidia Go 8600GT Dedicated
Connectivity:Wireless N, 56K Modem, 1GB LAN
Built in Devices:Inbuilt Webcam, Bluetooth, Card Reader, Fingerprint Reader, Firewire, Spill proof keyboard
Operating System:Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate
Warranty:24 Months International Pickup Warranty
Category:Multimedia, Gamingxxx:Genuine Lamborghini Docking Station

Advantages:
  • If any of you know me even just slightly, you'll know that I am obsessed with all thing automotive. Italian exotica is no exception. It even makes the revving of a Lamborghini upon startup. I know that sounds like a laughable gimmick to some, but to a car-lover it a welcome addition.
  • Its also little more, dare I say, elegant, in that it has beautiful contrast-stitched black leather and a smooth carbon-fibre style case.
  • From what I know, Asus > Acer in terms of quality.
Disadvantages:
  • The performance is clearly a little worse against the other competitor from Acer.
  • It will set me back $300 or so more.
ACER Aspire 8920G

Processor:Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 (2.4GHz)
Memory:3 GB DDR 2 RAM
Storage:320GB SATA HDD
Optical Drive:Blu - Ray DVD & DVD-Burner (DL)

Connectivity:Wireless N, 56K Modem, 1GB LAN
Built in Devices:Inbuilt Webcam, Card Reader, Bluetooth, HDMI, Fingerprint, Firewire, TV Tuner
Operating System:Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
Category:Multimedia, Gaming

Advantages:
  • 3gb ram, 1080p graphics, 320GB HDD, Blu-ray. Need I say more?
  • CineDash media console - brilliant.
  • Cheaper than the Asus Lambo.
Disadvantages:

  • Its an Acer?
  • Doesnt have that wow-factor or appeal of the leather Lamborghini Asus.
So what should I choose GTPlanet? Or are there other models of laptop that would satisfy me even more so?

"buy me a laptop". "It has to kick ass in the multimedia department"

Well there is the first problem. From memory those are close to $3,000 notebooks. For that you could top out a PC with the best of reasonable parts and leave these standing. A notebook with a 19" Screen is not something you want to lug around places. So it's you're just using it at home I'd be sticking to a PC.

That said, of the two the Acer is a far better buy, no contest. Not only does it have more performance than the ASUS, the ASUS was released over a year ago, and more expensive than the Acer. Also Acers Australian customer support kills ASUS so much it's not funny.

Pretty much with the ASUS you're paying for that Lambo badge and nothing else, it's exactly the same as the Ferrari branded ones.

EDIT: Another option I hate to say is a MBP. However, if you were the type of person who wanted one, chances are you wouldn't have made this thread.

From the two I'd choose the Acer because of the extras. Besides if you want the engine sound you can always download it from the internet and set it to run on startup.

I would try to get you to reconsider your position on Lenovo if you really want quality, but it seems that you have already narrowed your choices so I'll work from there. From the specs you posted, it seems that the Acer is the way to go. However, as Casio mentioned, you might as well purchase a desktop if you're not looking for portability.

If you're still unsure, check out Notebook Review. The site has reviews for most laptops and you can even find some great deals.

You're better off with the Acer, if you're after gaming. The Lamborghini VX2S is more or less for show, despite what's in it, so it's pretty far from being made to game on. It's a collector item, much like the Acer Lamborghini/Ferrari laptops were.

If you're going to pay that much for a laptop make it a Macbook Pro or Vaio SZ/SR.

lol, theres nothing wrong with lenovo's! Some of the newer models have dropped the IBM thinkpad styles and have gone all modern..

I wouldnt go with Acers because from what ive heard from some of my mates they are really unreliable, but that maybe the cheaper ones in the range...

I would go VAIO all the way for a mutimedia laptop no question!

Well, your kinda stuck if thats your only choice. The Asus does look nice, but the Acer is everything else better than the Asus..... With that said, I think I have to agree with these ones:
Take a look at the Dell XPS Range mate
Good for gaming and pretty much everything else. But its gonna cost a lot and I think the battery life is awful..... :indiff: (I have no idea about this laptop, but pretty much read a couple of reviews and most of them were positive)

If you're going to pay that much for a laptop make it a Macbook Pro or Vaio SZ/SR.
Its the best laptop you can get for your money, period. Once you own a Mac you will never go to a PC again...... :D Performance wise its similar/ better than the XPS and for 🤬 sake, its a Mac!!!! :D As for the Vaio, its quite good as well, but probably off a little from the macbook pro......

As for the Lenovo, it doesn't suck quite as bad as it used to. I think the newer Lenovos are better than before. Take the Lenovo IdeaPad U330 for instance, its pretty much everything you need on a laptop and more. Plus, it doesn't look half bad either..... 👍

In all honestly what you're paying for in a brand name, is the brand name and build quality. A VAIO with the exact same specs as a ACER will pretty much do the exact same thing, multimedia wise, so I wouldn't be saying "Vaio for multimedia".

The difference in the VAIO really is "Sony" (+15% price) and "Aesthetics" (+10% price). Like people say Thinkpads look like they're from 1997, but they still have the same performance as everything else but with a stronger build quality, which is something you might like to have with a 3k notebook.
