The Turbo Diesel Injection (TDI) engine has become one of VAG's most recognizable brands, with cars produced by almost all of VW's brands using the TDI engine in some form or another. The TDI engine was created by Audi back in 1989 and was first used in their Audi 80 and 100 models (with the 1990 Audi 100 being the first car to ever wear the TDI badge).
The most powerful of these early engines was the 2.5 R5 TDI, producing 118HP in the Audi 100 in 1990. Since then, the TDI engine has recieved several International Engine of the Year Awards (Winning 6 Categories in 1999).
The Audi 100 was an executive sedan that went into it's 3rd Generation (C3), alongside the 200, in 1982. The 100 Sedan was the most popular model of it's generation, selling 852,243 units (with the entire C3 Generation selling a grand total of 1,078,443 units over the course of it's production). Production for the C3 Generation ended in 1991. This resounding success led Audi Sport to work alongside Group 44 to build a racing version for the IMSA Trans Am series, which became one of the craziest touring cars ever to be created with it's unbelievably powerful engine and incredible QUATTRO AWD System, which led to the SCCa banning AWD and non-American engines from the series, which prompted Audi to move to the IMSA GTO Series.
