Confirmed: Audi Planning Diesel-Hybrid Supercar Above R8: http://bit.ly/Yd8UM1

" The new halo product will be a diesel-hybrid — just like the Le Mans-winning R18 and its predecessors — and will compete with hypercars like the Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari F70 and McLaren P1 in performance and price."

Interesting find and a very interesting concept, watching Le Mans last year I imagined how cool it would be to create a roadcar loosely based on the R18, a diesel-powered supercar just for the sake of making a diesel-powered supercar (mpg won't really concern those with the cash to buy one) is always a good argument to me. ;)

I saw the R18 last year at the ALMS 12hrs of Sebring. So impressive. They are so fast and all you hear is a 'woosh' when they fly by because they are so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

I suppose a diesel Audi supercar would make sense in terms of evolution just like how their Le Mans cars evolved from petrol to diesel.

Quote from Autocar in November 2012:

Audi is developing plans for a Le Mans-inspired diesel hybrid hypercar that would sit above today’s R8.

Insiders suggest the car could be badged as Audi R10, and is intended to be a road-going mirror to Audi’s Le Mans-winning R18 e-Tron quattro.

That car used electricity generated from a flywheel system to power one electric motor for each front wheel, improving the car’s performance, when pulling out of corners at speeds above 74mph.

There are no further details about what would be Audi’s flagship model, but expect a carbonfibre monocoque and a diesel no larger than a V8. The V12 diesel in the experimental R8 was judged as ‘too heavy and having too much torque for existing transmissions’ according to Audi sources.

It is quiet, very quiet with a pack of Vettes around it. I like standing at the edge of the Suzuki bridge at Road Atlanta when it pass. Whoosh and bridge shake.
