Audio Recording to laptop

Hey guys,

I recieved a laptop for christmas, and I am in a band. We have just started writing our own music, and we were thinking of purchasing some studio time. However, since i just got a laptop for christmas, i thought that maybe we could do some of the recording to my laptop. Heres my question - what would i need hardware wise to get the audio tracks into my computer, im thinking 5 or 6 separate tracks, and i would do all the mixing my self as ive done that before.

Thanks

M-Audio has some seriously expensive equipment fo mobile recording. I absolutely LOVE their stuff !...

Does your laptop have firewire?

There are actually a lot of options out there for portable recording, it all depends on your budget.

I might suggest Digidesign, check out their digi002 Rack version. ProTools baby, yeah!

There's really a lot of things to consider.... Do you currently have a mixer? Are you looking for 'live' recordings? Using it for pre/post production or just for getting ideas down? You mentioned 6 channels....., you can eat twice that much just on drums if you plan on close mic'ing everything.

If your looking at stereo or 4track recording from a mixer, there are some pretty inexpensive that will do 2-4 tracks just fine. If your planning on recording on the fly and fixing the mix later, you will need to close mic and direct record as much as possible on as many different tracks as possible to give you the best control over the mix. In this case I might suggest a digi02 Rack with a Presonus DigimaxLT. This will give you up to 20 inputs, 10 of which with built-in preamps.
