Audio settings changing back on their own

I have just bought a second set of speakers to supplement my 2.1 set-up (to have 4.1) and the only setting it works properly on (in the advanced audio settings, win XP) is quadraphonic. I set it to that, but Windows keeps changing it to the 3D speaker setting and shutting down my speakers by doing that. Could you please help me resolve this issue?

How do you have everything connected? As you said XP, I assume you're using two headphone jacks to connect each set (I ask because our answer would be very different for a home theater/receiver)?

Green jack for front and subwoofer, blue for rear. It works, until Windows decides it doesn't like it.
