Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the only road course race was the one in 1964. From 1965 on the events were on the 1/2 mile oval.

Thanks,

HistoricMustang, welcome to GTPlanet.

You may do better with your search results at another site I find useful. It's at AtlasF1 and their Nostalgia Forum is particularly useful for any type of motor racing history, not just F1 racing.

Great site, I checked it out and was surprised with how good it was. That "Lap Around The Augusta International Raceway" is it going to be a video, text or pictures. Either way tell me when it's done, it looks interesting.

Initially the "Lap around Augusta" will be in photo form. I was out there Friday (40 years to the day that the NASCAR boys were haulin' butt around the road course getting ready for the big race on the 17th) and took a pic every 150 yards around the entire 3 mile course.

If my plans hold up, this winter am going to take my Historic race car out on track for a lap and that will be in video form as a local TV station has agreed to air if I can get the County's approval to put the car on track. With current track conditions it will be at greatly reduced speed.

The track area is currrently owned by the local government.

Thanks,
HistoricMustang

Can you not just post that in your signature, rather than having to type it every time?

If you don't know how to do it, press the "quote" button, to quote my post. It'll bring it up on a new screen and just copy everything into your signature from this point:

Stop copying now... :D

The #97 is mine. The general rule is that pre 1960 is considered vintage and after that year they are viewed as Historic as long as the car is at least 25 years old.

Hmm. Just re-read my post... Looks like I'm putting a downer on your thread... Didn't mean to... :D

Nice car, by the way...

I have talked to several people that attended the events at the track - one did some laps and it appears the course was actually run "counter-clockwise". This would really be a discovery as most of the info up on the world wide web, including mine, has the course as being run "clockwise".

I talked to a NASCAR driver that ran the November 17th race but failed to ask him. If anyone can help with this please let us know.

A couple of other interesting things have come out of the research. The is a graveyard just beyond the "hairpin" at the highest elevation of the track and apparently Joe Weatherly gave a name to the area around the infield lakes - "Allegator Hollow".

Thanks,
Henry

Hmmm....I dont mean to sound bad or mean but, I dont think it should be restored I think they should put in wooden boardwalks throughout it and put up signs saying this was this and that was that...though they might have to clean it up a little to make it look good as a tourist attraction ..... other than that if I was them I wouldnt restore it....

You are correct. This former road course will never be raced again

Diamond Lakes Regional Park is being developed in the infield of the former circuit. Two state of the art ball complexes are currently in place and construction has begun on a new Library/Community Center next to the former pit lane.

The memorial being placed on September 11, 2004 will remember the former track, drivers and race cars.

The track will be converted into a walking and biking trail.

Thanks for your interest and come and join us for the dedication.
