I was just wondering, and sorry if this has been posted but I did search, what would be considered swearing. Obviously, the 7 dirty words, but what else. I've seen a word or two used here I would consider a swear word. I guess this may be hard to answer, so try your best please?

I'd say anything censored by the forum software is on the AUP block list. Anything else obviously isn't. Not sure if you are looking for examples?

Words considered unacceptable will be automatically censored by asterisks, like this ****.

If you're concerned about some other specific word, feel free to message a member of the moderation staff to ask them.

Not concerned simply just curious. Also, wanted to know how far I could go. Now I know, however, that they are censored automatically.

Also, if you feel like you absolutely must say something that is censored by the word filter (though the mods would prefer you use the "censored" smilie), say it and leave it. Don't edit something in that makes what you were saying more overt than what the censored text was, and definitely don't use characters to try to bypass it. Those are big no noes.

Really? All this time I thought that words were automatically filtered with the censored smiley...

Been living a lie all this time.

Nope. 🤬 is just like all the other smilies, **** is the software editing out an expletive.

Just asking: Is there any way to automatically use 🤬 as the default for censoring rather than the **** that usually comes up when you type expletives?

Don't try and put any hints as to which bad word you're using when you use *** (for example putting the actual first and final letter in but leaving the rest as **) because you get into trouble.

And it would be wise to put any slang for particular body parts that are considered inappropriate as **** because it just makes all a little cleaner to read.

Unfortunately, no.

My question is, why are we allowed to say 🤬 this way but not allowed to say **** this way? Do the mods see the asterisks or the actual word typed?

I think I know the answer but would like to know for sure.

edit: I suppose what I'm asking is, is it more of a punishable offence to say 🤬 or ****,which one are you more likely to get punished for?

I don't think you can get punished for either. You can only get punished if it's partially censored

You're "allowed" to do either.

When you become a mod, you can see the mods' secrets.

Neither. And neither.

They are hardly secrets.

For example we know about the draw each week for a random banning. :D

Oh, 🤬, who leaked that out? :grumpy:

I've got my money on the new guy, Jordan.

Interestingly (or not), arse isn't censored. Neither are a few more British profanities.

Well, not everybody here is British.

I don't curse much around here, and I keep the euphemisms to a minimum, or somewhat obscure if any. IRL and on the net, I don't curse much.

Same. I don't curse much because that's the way I've been brought up by my parents. Given the area where I live and the current attitudes that seems to be spreading across the western culture, people like us are a dwindling minority. :sly:

And I don't want to sound like a goody-two-shoes, but I quite like the way GTPlanet is censored in this way. It kind of keeps the place neater. 👍

If its unavoidable though, 🤬 is all I need.

Neither is ass. The American way of spelling it. And the English words that aren't blocked have a meaning for an actual word. Like "what a prick!" It doubles as, "OW! That thorn pricked my finger!" Sorry, if saying them annoys the mods I'm just doing it as an example... Obviously.

Plus, the word "fagot" can refer to a bundle of sticks. There was an episode of The Simpsons from 2006 where Martin says how one person, or a single twig, is weak but many bundled together can make a mighty fagot (I forget the exact wording), and the definition pops up on screen. There are lots of cromulent words that are treated as curse words.

What does wanker double as then?

The first five letters are necessary to describe a rotary engine...

The one that's caught me out on occasion is the word equivalent to laughing a little, that rhymes with "bigger". Thanks to the laughing word sharing entirely a bunch of letters with a certain derogatory term, it gets starred out by the software.

Never, ever thought about that one before.

Ass is a donkey. Arse is... well, a mild curse word but it's still allowed for whatever reason.

It's a question of scale. Saying, for example, bumhole isn't as harsh as its contemporaries and in fact looks quite childish. But it's not exactly formal speech. These things change over time. In the 18th/19th century it was quite acceptable to excuse yourself because you were going for a piss in the ****house. As was spitting at the table.

But you certainly wouldn't say that today in front of polite company. I don't think the F word was always taboo, now that I think about it.
