Local stars are hitting the Playstation 2 trail, writes James Stanford
Australian carmakers have jumped at the chance to line up their starts on the world screens.
Cars built by Holden, Ford Australia and Ford Performance Vehicles will feature in the Gran Turismo 4 video game for Playstation2, due to arrive in February. Only one Aussie -- the Tickford racing AU XR8 V8 Supercar -- has appeared in the game. It featured in GT3.
More than 36million Gran Turismo games have been sold. Gt4 will feature more than 650 cars -- from popular oldies to the latest showroom models and racing machines. Holden fans can drive the VY II commodore SS sedan and the series II Monaro Coupe. No Holden Special Vehicle cars have been approved for GT4 and are unlikly to be included.
Ford lovers will be able to drive the BA XR8 sedan complete with bonnet bulge. The Ford Performance Vehicles' V8 GT Falcon and turbo six-cylinder F6 Typhoon sedans are also in. Holden marketing manager John Elseworth says the madkers of the game approached Holden.
"A lot of kids want to drive Holdens in games such as this." He says.
Holden is also represented in V8 Supercars 2. The Holden racing team missed on the first version of the V8 racing game because it was tied to another software maker, but was not about to miss the sequal.
"GT4 and the V8 Supercars 2 game are the two biggest games around and we are in both," Elseworth says.
Japanese sources say the FPV GT and F6 Typhoon will be in the final GT4 game. But FPV spokesman Andrew Maclean says: "We can't confirm or deny if our products are in GT4. However, ther is no denying the GT franchise has been a huge success for the awarenesss of cars."
The 1970s Mazda Road Pacer, a Kingswood with a rotary engine, is also likly to make the final cut of GT4.
