Ever since I have this new computer I have been trying to find where to disable the Bill Gates feature that changes single quote + a vowel in to a special character.
Example: I type ‘e and Word and more importantly my Posts change it automatically to é.
I make much more use of words between single / double quotes ‘example’ "example" than special characters.
I’ve gone through Ctrl Panel Regional language settings and through Options in Word in an attempt to find out where I can switch of this behaviour but with no success so far.

My Keyboard setting is English UK
Regional settings UK
Running Windows XP SP2
Office 2003.

My workaround for this feature is to type single or double quote space vowel. I frequently forget to do that and then have to backspace and restart.
Do you know how to fix this ? If so can you let me in on the secret 👍

My old PC (XP sp2 + office 2003) doesn't show this behaviour and I've searched there as well to find the difference but to no avail.

It'll be the "Auto Correct" feature that's doing that. Its got a huge list of things its allowed to change, that includes special characters and common spelling mistakes. You can either turn if off completely, or remove the ones you don't want it to change.

But if you leave it on and it changes something you don't want, a single press of backspace will remove what it changed, and revert it back to what you typed.

EDIT: All that is just for Word. I didn't realise it was doing it in posts too.

Thx for your help daan. I did check that option as it is usually a setting in Word that you change that has effect on the rest of your computer.

Still weird though, on the old computer
MS Word, Tools, autocorrect, Replace text as you type is ticked and it doesn't change 'e to é automatically

On new computer
I had to untick this option to enforce 'example' to appear as I typed it.
So still havent found the real solution but at least I've got my single/double quote the way I want it. :)
