Avast! - Free?

So, i've been seeing guys here on GTP saying ''Avast! is great and free! You should try it!'' (Not exact quote, but you get it), but my avast says ''Your free protection against viruses and spyware ends in 11 days'' And im thinking ''What? The guys at GTP said it was free...'' So is it really free?
 
The free version does a one year free license and once that expires you just register again for another one year of free protection.
 
Avast is not the baddest AV out their.

You could be using AVG which is horrid.
 
The last time I use Avast! was 3 years ago and in terms of protection, it was good despite it being free. That time, I got a 14 months free key simply by registering in their website and I think it has been like that even until today so it should be free.

Before that, I've used AVG and Avira which both of them were horrible.
