I wanted to make myself an animated avatar and I can't use it because all I can do is upload the file to GTPlanet. I just wonder if you could add the option to use a image from an external source such as imageshack.

I'm only asking because I would like to use this gif that I made for my avatar.

I believe this is disabled due to avatar size rules.

Can I use my own custom avatar?
As long as it is appropriate, you can use any image you want for your avatar by uploading it via the form at the bottom of this page. Keep in mind that unless you are a Premium member, your avatar can be no larger than 20 KB in size or 100x100 pixels (Premium avatars can be 120x120) in dimension.

Oh no I made sure that it fit the 100pix rule(since I'm not a premium member). The only thing that I can't help is the size since it's such a large file size. I'm just wondering if Jordan could add the option to use a externally hosted image rather than upload it here. Normally other forums allow you to do that(I know that since I have used forum software before).

Or Jordan could raise the file size limit but that's up to Jordan.

Yes Nick, it is 65kb in size, not 20.

You just need to reduce the quality of the clip I guess.

EDIT: Didnt see your post. I think the size limit might have something to do with load times, not a lack of space for everyones avatars on his end.

Yeah I know. Changing the image colors to greyscale(black and white colors only) only reduces the size to 270KB from the original 293KB file size.

GTPlanet is plenty fast for me. I also visit another forum; even though it has many more images and even a flash banner it's still just slightly slower than this site.

About the best that can be done with 20k. Reducing quality will only do so much. You have to reduce frames, too.

And from an owners perspective, having everything local is preferred. You don't want to rely on another site for your site to display correctly.

Besides - the 20/25k top end forces you to be more creative to stay under the limit. ;)

Whoo.. It was extremely hard to get this animation down to size but I was able to keep it in fluid animation(only 9 frames, reduced from 85!) and came out with a cool red and black avatar. Though I badly need a larger upload limit so I can improve the animation. Just something like 35KB and it would work just perfectly. Also for a bit of amusement I also did some inverted colors:

They are a bit creepy so I'm not gonna use them.

Yeah I know. I just wanted a more fluid animation so I did the work myself. TB did a good job but it wasn't exactly to my taste. Though TB thank you for trying. I was just a little bit too busy last night so I forgot to thank TB.
