I went to create my own avatar today only to be informed that my nice little bitmap image was not a valid filetype.

Does anyone have a guide or know what filetypes are allowed for avatars? I know JPEG and GIF files will work, are there any others?

Also, how do you make the background for your avatar the same color as the site? I have just been replicating the color in Photoshop, but is there any other way?

(Before you slap me with the "SEARCH" spiel, I did a search and did not come up with the desired results).

Edit - For reference, the background color where the avatars are is #F0F0E9.

PNG will also work.

It looks like you have compressed yours as a JPG, PNG will give you less blurriness as it is a "lossless" compression.

Either a GIF or a PNG can have transparency, PNG has more sophisticated alpha transparency.

blame IE for everything. lets banish it. firefox, netscape or opera...NO IE!

Firefox, Opera or IE......No Netscape!

Seriously, Netscape is a bloated, overloaded pig, because it's based on Mozilla, which is a bloated, overloaded pig. That's why they started over from scratch and made the much-faster and much-more-streamlined Firefox. ;)

Also, IE isn't so bad as long as you don't want to do anything "special," like surfing without pop-ups, or not getting spyware/adware, or using flash/shockwave/java without getting some random error that forces you to close IE and lose where you were....

@Slicks: Bitmaps aren't very good internet files, because they're uncompressed. This makes them much, much larger than GIFs, JPGs, or PNGs.

Erm.... I'm on IE! (yikes, is it really that bad?)

I've figured out the Bitmap files are crap for stuff like this... I decided to go with a GIF file.

Kinda on topic - i can't remove or change my avatar (keeps going back to GTP.net).

We're having problems with PM's and video downloads at the minute. It may be connected to that.

I'm not great with computers, so please forgive me if I state the obvious.

I've just put an avatar up (Blue and white cartoon GSX-R 750) where the original image was 600x376 pixels, and 67.5kb. I did nothing to it, but it was accepted. Did the system adjust the size, or am I now outside the guidelines?

The system adjusted the size, as the image I see is 3619 bytes and 100x63pixels.

I'm happy with Netscape, no problems...

I've just lost my avatar, it's been replaced with a little red GT circle.

I had been using a small picture that I'd uploaded from my PC which I thought was inside the requirements? (240x136, 24bits,JPG,16.4KB.)

As the site accepted it I assumed it was within the guidelines, I've been using it for a couple of weeks and as I'd had no one mention it I thought it was OK?

If I'm in the wrong I sincerely apologise for my incompetence, (I too am one of the dreaded "nOObs" who has very limited knowledge of this sort of thing, sorry.)

Would have been nice if someone had notified me though as I would have been more than willing to take it down myself if it's not right.

Darren.

Dunno whats wrong with that then because the limit it 20kb or 100x100 pixels
(whichever is smaller).
It may be the fact yours is 240x136 pixels, but like you said, I aswell know nothing about this kind off stuff

That is odd, as I see your avatar. Grey car with red trimming on it?

Yep, sorry, it's back.

Don't know what happened there? I've not done anything, probably my end, my computers been playing up lately, running really slow.

Just thought it was odd that I could see everyone else's avatar and mine had gone, just assumed it had been removed.

Sorry for the false alarm.

I believe the max is 120x120, though only a handful of members have avatars of that size.

I think that size is only for premium users. 100x100 seems to be the limit for normal members. That's what it say's at the bottom of the avatar page in my GTP.

It's not just my avatar now though? Although my avatar is back, other things seem to be going amiss. For instance, I've gone advanced to write this post and the wrap WIKI tags bit is showing up as the idea smilie. I noticed earlier when writing a PM to someone that about three or four of the tool buttons were showing up a smilies instaed of thier normal icons?

Tried looking in the site feedback forum to see if anyone else had mentioned this but it seems it's just me, PC's dying on me I think, running really slowly and I've had some flash player problems I'm still not sure I've resolved.

My very limited knowledge isn't helping matters much so I think I'm gonna have to buy a new one. :ouch:

Anyway I've gone way too far off topic now so I'll shut up.

Darren.

Edit after next post: Dammit, I've just switched to Firefox! :dunce: (After the above problems started.)

Nah, I don't think it's the computer, it's GTP itself. I've recently noticed that pages haven't been loading correctly, but switching from Firefox to Safari probably doesn't help.

On the contrary, misplaced icons do not sound like a website problem. Everything is loading fine for myself and others have not complained - besides the fact that for such an issue to crop up out of nowhere would be nearly impossible. Try clearing your cache and temporary internet files to see if it resolves the problem.
