Baby Benz

The "Baby Benz" SLK 230 isn't used too much, so I took it out for a tune and a run around the track today. I wasn't all that happy with its sub-200 hp, so I got it up to around 300 using a stage 2 turbo and a few other mods. But then I realized....it's a Kompressor......which is the spiffy Benz supercharger. I went back to the garage and checked the NA/Turbo designation, and it even said supercharger there. So....why could I put a turbo on it? Does this work in real life...like twin turbos or something? I don't get it...can you match a turbo with a supercharger?

btw....sorry if this has been pointed out before...didn't find anything after a cursory examination of the search results.

A tubo and supercharger do the same job but differ in the way the turbine that compresses the incoming air/fuel into the engine is driven.
A supercharger is a turbine driven directly from the motor via a drive shaft, pulleys and belts. A turbo is a turbine driven by another turbine that is spun by the exhaust gases.
You can actually enter standard supercharged cars in the NA races!
When you fit the turbo upgrade to the SLK you are not adding a turbo as such but you are increasing the size of the turbine that is fitted to the supercharger.

OK...that makes sense. But here's another one for you. If it has a Kompressor supercharger, the stock turbine must be at least Stage 1 sized. But you can still but a Stage 1 "turbo," where most turboed cars skip the stage one upgrade (I think).

Ah no, the stock compressor is the standard size fitted. Stage 1 is the first level of upgrade, stage 2 the second level and so on if available.
For most turbo cars stage 1 is the 1st level of upgrade. The 787B only has stage 1 available which increases horsepower from 670 to 960 (approx). The Imprezza LM car however only has stage 3 or stage 4 available. The Skyline race cars can have stage 1, stage 2, stage 3 & stage 4.

actually, it is possible to supercharge AND turbocharge a car. it is really expensive and not extremely beneficial, as I recall they only did it for the pure wow factor of having both.

purely from memory here but isnt there a car called the march super turbo, or super turbo r, i cant even remember if it was the nissan march or not.

Yes there was. The Nissan March (Micra) Super Turbo arrived in 1989.

The reason for the turbo and blower cobo was so Nissan could exploit the racing regulations of the time. 1.0-liter NA cars could be raced in a certain class alongside turbocharged cars with 0.7-liters of displacement.

Nissan's crack staff found out that superchargers could be used alongside the turbocharger to bend the rules in their favor. This car had about 105hp, not bad for a 713cc engine!

That car's in GT2, by the way. Lotsa fun.

You can do anything if you have money, but you cannot do it in GT3 ;)

well I didn't mean in GT3, I actually meant IRL. I saw it in a mag, I wonder if I could dig it up again...

Would not it be efficient to just increase the boost on a turbocharger/supercharger instead of having both in the same place?

Anyways, back on topic: GT3 is weird like that. It is like the 787b in real life does not have a turbo in it, yet there is a turbo upgrade for the car in GT3.

Weird, 'eh?
