Backgrounds In GT4 2D or not 2D?

Does anyone know which tracks will have 2d backgrounds?

I have an old copy of Prologue and realize parts of the distant backgrounds in the grand canyon, among a few others, are 2d.

Of the new videos, I really don't think the backgrounds of them are 2d.
They must be 3d. The damn game is looking like it is a PS3 game.

Does anyone know of any list somewhere that tells what tracks have 2d backgrounds and which ones don't? :odd:

And since the graphical quality of the game has been improved upon so drastically is there any word that those 2d backgrounds might be made fully 3d?

in the final game it will be all 3d, for example 3d crowds, and god knows what will be in the final game

I hate to bring this up, but this was discussed WAY early. Check out this hated-on thread for the same discussion. WARNING! Update this topic, and GTP members will probably be p*ssed off about it. So for our sake, just read and leave:

Just for the record.
The backgrounds will always be 2d images, the ps2 simply could not manipulate al that detail in 3d.
They may be mapped on to some shaped models to give the impression of depth as in the grand canyon, but they will always have 2d Images mapped onto them.

They are just about getting limited variation 3d spectators in the game now and that onlys in places where there are a max of 2 cars, ie Tarmac and dirt rally courses so dont expect them to perform miracles with the background.

...i think all in 3D (like the people around the track for example!!)

"The damn game is looking like it is a PS3 game."

Comedy. If those are PS3 graphics I shaln't be buying one LOL

PS2techidiot, I hope you suffer for making this thread.

For the record some bits are 3D (buildings etc, close track) but some bits are 2d (sky, distant plains, distant bits where it doesn't matter). IMO it doesn't matter, long as it looks good :)

I could careless how it looks, I want gameplay.

...i want the cars(especially my favorite one---u know which imean--)!!!!

The sky is not 2D. You could not have moving clouds and still have the realistic lighting plus reflections of the sky on the buildings that actually curve with the surface of the glass.

Either way, if the closed courses are 3D then it proves the PS2 atleast has more raw power when creating a racer.

When BLACK gets released all the PS2 haters like yourself will simply STFU :)

I bet you are one of the misinformed pubic that thinks the PS2 could never do a game like Riddick?

hahaha tell me that when Black gets released or when Riddick comes out on PS2.

To sum up this reply, incase you haven't noticed, stop being rude to people simply because they post a topic you don't like. If you don't have anything to say that answers any questions to the topic at hand then simply don't reply to it.

I'm sure it was discussed WAY early when the game had 2D spectators.

Many things have changed since then in GT4's graphics., such as, 3D spectators.

I hope no more trouble comes from this thread, eh?

Have fun discussing what the backgrounds would look like.

For the record, a television is not capable of displaying three-dimensional images. Everything is 2D.

The backgrounds may be faux-3D, in that they give the appearance of being three-dimensional, but in reality they are only displaying an image in two dimensions.

Who ****ing cares about background anyway?

I'm done with it. Close it if you want.

I guess we will just have to wait and see what PD can muster up.
💡

I do know of one game where everything, except maybe the sky, (I dont even know of a game that has a 3D sky since the sky and air would be empty space anyway) is 3D and that game is Burnout 3.

I just think the game would look more natural if it were mainly 3D. I noticed when you drive around Grand Canyon there are sections that you can tell are faked and it doesn't blend in with the game correctly. But hey, Riddick is mainly a 2D game and it looks pretty good. 👍

As long as they can texture map the backgrounds so it looks natural I'm all for it.

Or play halo 2

I guess I am

I own a ps2, i can't hate it that much :P

I'm quite sure a ps2 couldn't do riddick as well as the xbox could, I mean I'm 100% sure it could do a version of it, but i STRONGLY doubt it could do all the beautiful bump mapping etc in the same way the xboxs pc style hardware can. It's not about being a hater, it's about facing facts, the words raw power don't apply to consoles, they apply to pcs. btw burnout 3 looks fricking SUPER, all ready pre ordered it on xbox :D I CAN NOT WAIT :D :D :D I want the best version ofc :D (that will wind some ps2 fanboys up heheh)

Timespitters 2 would have been just as good as HALO if it didn't cut out the online mode.....

And please don't turn this into ANOTHER ps2/x-flop debate!!!

I too don't want to see this turn into a console bashing seesion. But by saying "please don't turn this into ANOTHER ps2/x-flop debate!!!" your encouraging it.

The backgrounds are 2D images (photos of the landscape) rendered in high resolution onto a 3D wireframe model. This streching and mapping around the base frame gives it the appearance of 3D but it is actually flat. When you take a photo you can see where the shadows lie, if you were to print the photo out onto a flat piece of paper and fold it where the lighter and darker areas were accordingly you would get PD's secret to amazing looking backgrounds! These background should look even better in photo mode due to the higher resolution.

In essence thay are 3D.....but each face of the model is a flat photo...... :D

Robin

p.s.......Is it just me or does Fuji's (on Prologue) background look really really poor (blurred) compared to amazing ones such as the grand canyon or citta di aria!!! I hope PD take the photo's of the Fuj landscape backgound again or do somthing with the 3D model beacause it has no depth and looks.....YUK!!!

Dear god, that is comedy, thats like saying ford racing would have been as good as GT if it had an online mode

x-flop...*shakes head* pathetic

Stupidest post award. Makes a comment that perpetuates the debate, then asks for it to be stopped in a derogatory manner that will incite further debate. Kudos to you.

Meanwhile we have people like robin coming out with the post of the thread in my opinion. Yes all the trackside objects will be fully 3d (within the game world, though in essence, what you are viewing IS in fact a 3d image as nothing 2d can physically exist - you're viewing atoms which have a depth) but having 3d skies is simply unrealistic - you're going to render the universe to get the lighting correct? Good luck. That's what skyboxes are for - 2d images wrapped onto a remotely 3d frame creating an illusion. From what I can see GT seems to employ a layered system with various layers appearing at a certain draw distance (one behind the other) similar to older platform games (Donkey Kong Country 2 comes to mind). Take a look at some of the pics posted of the Nurburgring - there's the illusion of a reasonable draw distance created by layers of images showing the hill nearest the track in decent detail, then the hills a few k away are somewhat blurred and then the hills towards the horizon are almost completely obscured by atmospheric haze - yet the images are all probably stacked within metres of each other in the game world.

...will there be a man who waves the ckecked flag??? i saw it in the intro of PROLOGUE and hope there will be!!!...but if yes, will the man stand on the track or where else?

I really really really !!!! hope that there is a checkered flag waving man in the game, whether he is on the track or behind some sort of wall :D It would add huge realism to the game. The scene with the 2 GT40's finishing at New York with the checked flag looked amazing........I dont think it would be hard to do because PD now have a 3D moving crowd and photographers runing into the road... so why not a guy waving a flag!

I also hope they have a real pit crew, whether it is a cut (dvd) scene or not.....I really wana see the car lifted off the ground, the fuelling rig going in and the tires being changed.......PD have teased us with loadsa snips of these amazing features, i hope they make it into the release.

Also.....I saw a video (I think off IGN) ages ago of what appeared to be a cut scene with a huge crowd gathered around a podium at night with a car under a silver sheet being revealed (like how they do it at motorshows)......it looked amazing with the cheering and the photo flashes........my question is......Could this be the scene when you win a car!!!!!!!!.......PLEASE SAY ITS TRUE!!!! :D :D :D

Robin

o_O You just gave me a thought I might make a post about.

As for the checkered flag, be nice, as long as they do it properly, not some jerkimation attempt.

.........Hmmmmmm interesting, yeah you should post about it, this is a discussion forum, it don't mater if some people get annoyed...I wana talk about these kinda track side features, everyone talks about the cars too much!

Robin

Don't knock Timesplitters2. It was a pretty good game. Much faster action than Halo. The variety of objectives and mini games definitely gave it something that Halo lacks. Plus, it has a level editor (somewhat primitive, but still).

And who said Riddick is mostly 2D? That's ridiculous.

The backgrounds in GT4 will be 2D, and aren't even processed with the rest of the track. They only move when the camera moves. That's probably why it is noticeable on some tracks that the background doesn't seem to match the track in places. This way, the background's geometry doesn't have to be calculated,
and your perception of depth is all handled by the camera (it always is anyway).
