Bad news if you don't have your original console....

So does this mean if you registered your psn ID on a burned up fatty 5 years ago, a HD that's long gone, you're screwed and have to start all over?

No, if you read on you can also do it via email verification on your regional PSN website.

If you've also lost access to that email address then, well.... *pooft*

Sony wouldn't be that stupid... Would they? Because I've gotten a new one since I registered =P
 
Just checked, the OP was misled by quoting a third-party who had chopped up the most important part of the Sony press release!!!

It's confirmed right there... the account activation PS3 (should mean any PS3 that you've succesfully recovered your PSN:ID to?), or by email validation.

You must change your PSN password. There are two ways to do this;

a) Use the PS3 that you made your account on.
b) Use the PlayStation website and change your password there. You'll receive a confirmation email in the account that you used to set up your PSN account.
