When the 2010 F1 season begins, we know they'll be in Bahrain. Only thing is the track configuration will be different from last year.

As I said on a Facebook group page earlier today...
Long track is looooooooooooong. But how close to in lap length is it compared to Spa?

What will the sectors be for the longer variation? I know the older layout had sector 2 starting right where the new loop rejoins the old layout, but the length now makes me think Sector 1 would be too long.

I'm looking for a personality in this track and I still dont see it

Ill have to watch an onboard shot, but it looks like a mess from the track map, like somebody blindfolded themselves and attempted to draw a track.

I'm not so sure about that, Earth. I crunched the numbers a little bit, and this is what I came up with:

Using Google Earth, I measured each section of the track over the course of one kilometre and counted the number of turns within that section. Including turn four and the new turn thirteen (because the new section is only eight hundred metres long), this section of track has ten corners in the space of one kilometre. But doing the same to the old circuit, the most I could manage was five corners in the space of one kilometre, which was on the run down from turn four to what is now turn seventeen.

Now, I'm no expert, but Bahrain is fairly quick. It might have hairpins, but it has lots of long straights and faster sections. However, this new section of the lap is very slow and actually quite limited. It's cramped and confined. Yes, it's a bit Mickey Mouse, but it's also at odds with everything else on the circuit. It's a total paradigm shift for the venue. And I think that will probably translate in the setup of the cars.

I'll have to reserve full judgement until I see an onboard

In terms of turns, I dont want quanity over quality when it comes to my tracks. One of the reasons why I'm not too in love with the Nurburgring.

I don't like it, approaching the fast chicanes was at least close to interesting but approaching that new Mickey Mouse section is not, that's my impression.

Actually in terms of average speed the layout that's been used until now isn't that fast, just average in F1. It used to be THE stop-and-go circuit in F1 until the introduction of another cloned Middle East track in 2009 (I'm looking at you, Yas Marina). Over a single lap, Bahrain was second only to that other track when it comes to gear change count, beating Monaco.

Formula 1 will always have a stop-start circuit, even if all of the circuits were built along the same lines of Monza because there will always be one circuit that is more stop-start than the others. If Bahrain is to be that circuit, well, that's not a bad thing. It's not like they're breaking up the flow of something like Spa.

And Yas Marina isn't that bad. I agree with Jackie Stewart, who said that it's not an instant classic, but it is a decent circuit. It's probably Tilke's third-best, after Sepang and Istanbul. It's certainly better than Shanghai and Bahrain.

So say Yas Marina is bad Earth is like saying that the Valencia street circuit is good(!)

I like Bahrain as it was because at least the fast chicane gave the drivers somewhat of a challenge but this new layout = epic failure waiting to happen.

There was only ever two decente places to pass on that circuit and they were turns one and four. They are decreasing the tightness of four which is going to make that corner out of the question for passing so we are down to one passing chance and that is turn one.

Personally, didn't see the need for a new part put in

I suggest you take a look at turns nine and ten (on the old layout), then. In order to take turn ten properly, the drivers have to brake and turn through nine at the same time, somthing that is incredibly difficult. And according to the radiolemans podcast, the new section is actually quite good, particularly the first half of it.

i was on about five and six, not nine and ten

I know you were. But while you're saying five and six are difficult, I'm saying nine and ten are harder. You make it sound like Bahrain is losing the only two corners that give any kind of challenge, but it's not.

Okay, point taken, nine and ten are a lot harder to master than five and six.

In discussions with a friend to watch this race...

It's approx £400... seriously tempting. (Cheapest weekend tickets)

Take us as well, it is on me birthday :sly:

So why are you posting in a thread about Bahrain then? The testing season in Valencia has nothing to do with a new layout for Bahrain. This could have gone in any one of the threads about the new car launches, since they're all being tested in Spain right now. Or, failing that, you could have made your own thread for the testing season.

Ignore the off-road driving, country back roads and barricade in the first one ... I'm pretty sure the circuit he was driving was supposed to be the perimeter circuit, but he took a detour for the purposes of the video.
YouTube links fixed. ;)

Maybe the person should have used this Bahrain Track mod instead. According to the mod groups blog post from last year, They've included 5 track layouts in that mod which includes the one used for the 24 Hour race. I hear that'll be the one used in the upcoming F1 race as well.

I'd say the person who made the video was more concerned about getting it out there than having the most accurate video there is.
