Battle cam (idea)

I'm a replay kinda guy. I like some good clean fights on the track, especially in online mode, and I like to kick back and watch those fights afterwards.

The problem for me is, the replay camera angles in GT5 (and every other GT game) are focussed on one car, and one car only. Every now and then there is a wider shot, letting you see more of the fight itself and other cars in the background, but in general your car will be in the center of your screen 90% of the time.

Why not make a sort of automatic battle cam that could be enabled or disabled?
When disabled, replays would just look the same as they do now, focussed on the car you selected. But with this function enabled the camera view could be widened to more than one car, if let's say they were within one second of each other on the track.

I believe that with this function the game would be much more lifelike, simulating real camera angles used in racing around the world. With the current replays I can't help the feeling I'm watching a game, no matter how good the graphics are, because of these car-centered camera shots.

Watch this clip from 3 minutes onwards and you'll see what I'm talking about: (I got it from this topic)

This is a GREAT battle. I only wish I could see more of it, because the second car goes off screen all the time, even if they're just 1-3 car lengths apart.

I'd like to hear your thoughts about this, and I'm sorry if this already came up but I could'nt find it using the search function :)

EDIT:

I've learned that this was e feature from GT3! If anyone can post me some evidence about this, I'd be greatly appreciated!

Good idea. You could always try and give Kaz a call/Email.
No seriously, this is something I'd like to see. Would make replays more life-like.

+1 replays are extreamly boring at the moment, lack of view change and massive lack of viewing the race it self, it feels alot like close up of your car during the race replay lol.

We need a massive petition to get some awsome replays!👍

Hovering cameras is my worst pet peave when your(when your car is doing 160mph and theres a camera flying right next to it with a super close up)

Why not place stationary cameras at every corner and let players control them or automatically follow the action!

I'm pretty sure this was a feature of one of the earlier GT's replays (probably GT3?). When two cars where near eachother the camera would try to track both of them.

Unless that was another game...

GT3 was the pinnacle of replays. You paused, then got to select normal or competition camera [exactly what is being asked for here, though I don't remember what it was actually called].

Wow, really? I'd like to go back to GT3 and find out, but I sold my ps2 :)

Edit: seems you are right! Proof: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=106172#post3009920

From this old post:
i prefer the replay options in GT3 better. one option is when there is a battle between two cars, the camera focuses on those two cars, making you feel like you're really watching a battle, which BTW looks cool

Epic battle. Setting the camera to the front car in my experiance is better to watch battles as the 2nd car is always in the background

They should add more F1 cameraish things. Like the shot of the straight with the finish on it and the cars come around the corner 1 on 1 going for a photo-finish. And helicopter cams. Some action from the pit-box would make it even more awesome. That when you overtake the first guy in the last round and the last 3 corners, the whole pitbox cheers. And the people hanging on the fences at the last round. Stuff like that. To give it more of a real race feel. And a setting to just see the overall race. To get footage of everyone. And an option to get the camera focused on you.
But also some funny shots of fans around the track and stuff like that. Photographers that actually move. Just some more movement outside the cars.

I agree. The game is epic and some of these races are very intense, but that intensity doesnt translate into the replay.

An easy fix would simply to allow us to change view in online replays, at least to a bumper or roof camera view. This would at least give an "onboard" camera shot (it would also help in understanding how some online incidents occured).

Yeah, the only way to find out how accidents happened right now is to pauze the game and go into photo mode. Then you can circle around the car and try to determine who did what.

I dont understand why PD decided to waterdown stuff that was in previous GTgames. Why did they decide not to keep the GT3 replay options. It's so mind boggling. They take out the best features from previous games and make them more complicated and inconvenient than they really need to be.

It actually wouldn't be so bad if you could switch through the cars with the D-Pad like in all the other GTs, really missing this feature. Just as you can't define a "secondary" camera, to which you can switch with a single button (let's say I want one of the in-board cameras just for a couple of seconds, I press X and select that camera with the d-pad, X again for the "TV" view and again X for the in-board cam).

I agree, very amusing! You can tell who's using a wheel, nice. 👍

I wouldn't be surprised if some of that twich came from lag due to the fact it's an online race.

And I agree with OP... I think as games have been getting better and better assets, they have been focusing more and more on showing them off... close ups on pretty car models are taking over where wide action oriented shots used to be.

Helicopter and blimp cams are two huge steps in the right direction I would like to see.
