Sorry about the title :odd:

Here's a game we used to play at school, when I was but a wee lad. Basically it's a contest to see who you lot think is the undisputed king of the animal world.

I put up two animals, you vote on which one would win in a no-holds-barred slugfest. Remember to give your reasoning behind your vote (otherwise, where's the humour?)

Rules of the ring are as follows...

- The beasts involved may only use their natural physical abilities and may not use other objects (so no gorillas with Kalashnikovs please!)

- Geography goes out the window in this so please don't say "But they come from different parts of the world". It's not real!

- Most animals are not instinctively aggressive unless provoked or are shown a specific form of body language. For the sake of the game, the two animals involved are really pissed off!

- Land features such as water, trees and snow etc. are acceptable. Use them how you will to reach a desicion for a winner.

- The animal with the most votes at the end of the week will continue into the next round.

- Each contest will consist of four matches. The creature left standing at the end will be crowned 'Undisputed King of the Animal World', or something like that.

- You may volunteer an animal for the next battle, but my decision will be final.

Disclaimer: Before anyone says this is cruel, and there are people that would (and indeed it would be if it was real), I will say that I am above all a nature lover and have or would never intentionally inflict or wish to inflict pain and suffering on an animal of any sort other than in self-defence. Although I admit to killing my fair share of mosquitos and one cockroach that flew out of a garbage can and onto my face. I know it wasn't it's fault, but I didn't fancy going down with dysentery thank you very much!

Animals are our friends and let's not forget it!

OK then. Let's meet the contestents...

We're in the continent of Africa for this grudge-match.

In the red corner, weighing in at 6000lbs and with a record of 0/0 is the mighty African 'most dangerous animal in Africa' hippopotamus.

And in the blue corner, weighing in at close to 1500lbs and also with a record of 0/0 is the infamous Nile 'got teeth?' crocodile.

Let battle commence!

Nile 'got teeth?' crocodile.

It will tear that Hippo apart with his sharp teeth and it will be able to move faster.

Actually Hippo's have sharper teeth, more powerful jaws and are faster along the bottom of a river then a Croc.

u sure a hippo is faster than a croc? specially in water?
this is a reptile here, been here longer than a hippo, and i also DOUBT a hippo has stronger jaws, then a croc

why not a hippo vs an elephant?

Why not a chimpanzee vs a tortoise? Because that's what it is! There's always one, isn't there ;)

Now vote!

EDIT: I don't think a crocodile can create much force when trying to open it's mouth. All the force is created when it snaps the jaws shut...SNAP!

Crocs kill their prey but biting into the skin and dragging the prey down to the bottom of a river to drown it.

A hippo kills its prey by biting huge chunks out of it and goring it with its 8-10 inch teeth. My votes goes to the hippo.

I feel sorry for the croc. The hippo would rip him a new one. The croc could bite it all day long, and i dont think the hippo would care.

When he wrestles with a croc, he clamps the jaws shut with his hands and he is safe. Have you ever heard of someone trying to clamp a hippo's jaws shut?

Acually its because crocs dont have power when they open their mouth its when they clamp down, i saw that on tv the other day:D

There's really no contest here. The hippo takes it.

There's just really no way that the croc would be able to do enough damage. Hippos are huge with really think hides. Those little croc teeth wouldn't ever get through.

Its easy to keep a crocs jaws closed, try and stop them from biting though. Crocs are easily faster in the water, jsut think about it. They're been around for thousands of years, if they werent quick enough thyey would have died out by now.

I vote for the hippo. The croc's main strength in combat is in a stealth-approach, deadly-first-contact-mode. I don't think it could take the hippo down in the first contact, which would allow the hippo to come back at it.

And then the hippo would be able to use its greater weight and more versatile jaws to good advantage. And I also think that the hippo can sustain more damage prior to being disabled than a croc.

im going for the croc....simply because its the underdog

also......its a relative of the TRex.....so if it needed help, i could take a time machine back to the jurassic days, call its TREX buddy, travel back to the present, and doubleteam the S*** out of the hippo.

croc on this one.....although i did accidentially put "ill sit on the fence for this one"

Are you a retard? I said that the hippo was faster, and then in my next post in this thread (directly after one of yours), I corrected myself with the facts as they stand.

And the hippo streaks into an early lead! So, no-ones giving old toothy a hope in hell eh?

I would agree that in this battle royale, a hippo would beat the living daylights out of a crocodile. I would think that the only way a crocodile could beat a hippo would be through suffocation or loss of blood. I would imagine a full grown hippo would exert the kind of force in it's bite to be able to snap an average size croc. in two, but I'm still not entirely convinced about the outcome of a hippo versus a big twenty footer.

Perhaps a really big croc. would have the strength to be able to hold a hippo under until it drowned. Hippos can hold their breath for about five minutes, but with all the struggling, I imagine in this situation it would be a fraction of the time.

I 'plumped' for the hippo though.

its true that crocs have the hardest bite ( almost 3000 lbs of pressure) but the hippo is MUCH bigger ( up to 8000lbs) and the hippo must bite pretty hard to. Plus the hippo's skin is very thick, and the crocs little teeth might not do too much damage, and also the hippo could step on him...I would give this one to the hippo.

any more battles anyone??

oh and I almost forgot...I saw that crocs eat baby hippos sometimes but if they tried to kill an adult they would end up being crushed or bitten...so otherewise...killed

poor crotch
i knew from the start u were wrong..
and your especially wrong about the jaws of a croc.

Well I am glad to find out that there are varying degree's of wrongness. Particularly about being especially wrong regarding the jaws.

Anyway, if I was incorrect about the strength of the croc's jaws, so be it; the Hippo won the poll in any case.

Well, that thread went down like Paris Hilton! Never mind.

By the way, the Hippo won...
