bought the new 500GB PS3 a while back and gt5 wont install. last time i tried it was stuck at 21seconds for 3 hours and nothin happened. someone else who experinced this????????

To the OP, try installing the game data first WITHOUT being connected online. Once that is done, then start with the updates. Thats what I did and it was fine.
No abuse there. No hate there. Not playing moderator. Just letting the new guy know what the rules are that we all have to follow and letting him know that he should fix it before an actual moderator jumps on him for it. I could have explained it more, but it wasn't done out of nastiness.

OT: I remember having the installation "freeze" when I was initially installing everything, however it was so darn long ago that my memory of it is a little fuzzy..

I had the same problem with a brand new ps3 320 slim. It froze with 52 seconds left. I turned off my ps3 and reinstalled and it worked, but I had problems. I had to reformat and then reinstall a 3rd time, and it worked like a charm. If you can't find any other solutions, you may try doing this.
Have tried to play a CD, DVD or BlueRay on your PS3 ? Did they all work fine? If so then it really sounds like your GT5 disk may be corrupt.
It should only take 30-50 minutes to install although I've read that it has taken as much as 70 minutes for some folks. Not sure why the huge disparity in time but 3 hours is definitely not right!

Anyway, let me try to help you with a response. Try to install the game data while NOT connected to the net. In other words, start over. Once that is done, then try the updates. It should work.

This is getting stupid now, with all these wannabe mods constantly belittling the OP. Why not leave it to the mods to correct him, and in the meantime, do something helpful(?) Anyways, I've edited the OP^, so maybe hopefully the wannabes will leave, and the OP will get some advice.

His question has been "resolved" - he went and bought the Academy Edition, and it now works fine. That's the only reason why this thread was bumped, to let everyone who posted before know that it's working fine now.
