I nominate Nissan FJ20, very strong, durable engine with alot of power potential which Nissan used often in racing for this reason in the 1980's.

I do think that JNasty4G63's attitude in post #25 was a bit uncalled for, but I simply can't stand it when people resort to this (childish) logic:
mighty defensive arent we? i think you protesteth too much. i wonder why? perhaps coz theres truth in what i said.

As JNasty4G63 said in post #30, "best" means something different depending on who you ask, whether it's power, reliability, sound, or fuel efficiency. I do believe that debate was carried out before (several times, I'm sure) in YSSMAN's "best car" threads. So let's try to get along and not drag this 4-cylinder nomination thread into an off-topic debate on the matter.

Remember, the voting ends tonight, but the nominations continue until tomorrow morning.

ONCE AGAIN, my b!tching was because some of these nominees and votes were unvalidated. no real reason was given, the merits that prompted the vote/ nomination were not indicated. this is what leads me to think that a lemming/ sheep/ follow the leader vote has taken place. or a "the bike is cool so the engine must be."
i know you understand what im saying here. no need to be pedantic.

and no wolfe, sound does not a good engine make. i realise that there really arent parameters by which the voting should take place which is why i keep questioning some of the posts, but sound is pretty much irrelevant unless you think all the engines are equally good. and if you think they are all equally good then there is no best one. the votes arent for best sounding. they are for best.

i like the bashee wail of a two stroke motor, but you dont see me voting for them.

I agree with you. I hardly think an engine can be called the "best" on the sole merit of sounding good (except for something like the Carrera GT's engine :sly: , but even then, it makes great power and revs really nicely).

However, I don't think our opinion on the matter should determine whether or not other people are "allowed" to vote based on the sound of an engine. That's my point.

....the votes arent for best sounding. they are for best.
But you see, what makes something "best" in one person's opinion is obviously different from your opinion. The word "best" can mean a lot of things. Best mileage, best power, best efficiency. But, this poll didn't narrow it down to which of those specifics it was, so it was open. Thus, people can nominate AND vote for an engine based on any criteria they like.

And anyway, how can we REALLY have a poll for the "best" engine. The term best is a inherently a quantifiable term. The "best" power output of a group of cars. Or, the best mileage. Or, best emissions. Those are all things that can be measured, and then labled as a "BEST" feature.

This poll should probably been labled as "Favorite 1&2 Cyl" engines. That way, it is purely a personal measure. Like a favorite food, or favorite color. Those are things that you can poll for.

both of you.

exactly. this is why i strove for clarification first in most of my first posts in the threads. best is such a vague term.
