I've made a mistake in buying the 1992 Mitsubishi Lancer EVO, and it's not worth much for trade-in.

Combined with my craptastical driving skills, I'm not winning many races. Opponents keep pulling away from me on the straightaways.

What are some good sub 20k cars to replace this with?

Side question - isn't the game supposed to select opponents with the same class of car?

I started with a used Rx-7. Really good car in my opinion. After that, i got a used S2000 (later bought a new one as well). Just love that car.

That should help you some...

Start doing some of the licenses, you'll win some nice cars even without golds or silvers (I can't get all golds or silvers for the life of me). You'll also notice that in the used car section there's some nice skylines for around 16-18k with considerably low mileage. Also in regards to the classing, most of the time that is true but since there are so many more cars in this game it seems you're racing some very good performers very early on. But get one of the skylines whip up on some beginner races (i.e. sunday cup) and start winning some cars and money get upgrades and you'll be rolling pretty easy for awhile.

Yeah do the licenses, then use the RX-8 prize car to win the RX-8 Concept LM Race Car in one of the Mazda competitions. From that point on it's easy pickins.

You're doing something wrong. I started with a 92 Evo as well, and I just completed the Sunday cup, then upgraded, then completed the next set of races, then upgraded some more. I just sold it, and it had an exhaust, chip, stage 2 turbo, and racing intercoolers on it. 350hp.

If you're looking for another car, though, there are some damn nice 91+ Rx7s in the used car lot. I picked my '96 up for about 12k. Throw on a Stg.1 turbo, chip, flywheel, and stg.1 ltw, and that car will fly.

I used the infiniti g35 as my first car (thanks to the 100k), but under 20k you could get a 300zx, or an rx-7...

If someone figures out a way to get traction in gears 1-4 in an SRT-4 with all the boltons with a stage 1 turbo, that'll be a mean pocket rocket.

If you want to look at the license cars:

I don't really think any of them are that good, but all the Silver cars are decent. The A silver car is actually the Acura DN-X '02 in the US version, and it's all-around good.

The A License Gold car is a race Skyline, but honestly the plain A License is probably the hardest one to gold since A-13 is the dreaded Skyline R32 at Trial Mountain (well, I certainly think it sucks, but I haven't actually golded anything but regular B, A and IB yet).

The plain Bronze car for IA is pretty good. You're going to have to do all of them sometime, so you might as well do them first. The pace car tests are a nice introduction to the new courses in GT4.

If it's anything like GT3, a Miata with a Stage 2 should be just about the best bang for the buck you can get to tear up the Beginner events.

Actually, I picked up a used Miata 1800 RS, quick oil change and added a supercharger. A lot of bang for your buck there, and gobs of torque down low.

i found a Skyline GTR '95 for $16000

twinturbo supra for $11000

there were a few WRX STI's in under $20k, as well as some Evo's too, and some 3000gts (NOn SL)

theres 3 used (2 used, one classic) car lots to choose from, there were dozens of deals for under $20k 👍

Hey man I started with the same car and had some of the same top end speed problems, even at ~400 hp. Be patient, go to the Japanese races and enter the easiest one (don't remember the name). Win those and you get a nice Nismo tuner. From there it's pretty damn easy to win a race series that will give you a race car, which makes things a cake walk. Best of luck.

I like all the Lancers. If you can afford to fit a full race gearbox you can raise the top speed. I go into settings and select the normal gearbox and go into the adjustment screen to see where the lines are for the gears. Re-fit the full race box and make sure that top gear is further up the scale. Add a turbo upgrade and it should win easily. The brakes on the Lancer's seem more powerful than some of the other cars.

i nearly always get a lancer evo 3 or 4 with racing muffler and step 2 turbo, goes like fU-ck and sounds pretty sexy too :D

My favourite Lancer is the EVO V as it seems to run more smoothly than the others.

I picked up a '95 STI used for under $10, put the racing chip in, and stage 1 weight reductiuon. No problems with it at 280hp. Wins the beginner stuff easily, and had no problems with the awd events either.

Viper Zero
Do the license tests. IB and IA give out some nice cars.

For the IB license I got the Nike One. You can't even enter it in a lot of the races. It's next to being absolutely useless. Oh, and it's the stupidest looking car in the whole game. Ooooh, it's supposed to be from the year 2022. LAME.

You guys were right - I was doing something wrong.

Threw a few bolt-ons onto the car, had it pushing 350hp, and started winning races.

Found a 'cheat', Special Conditions race #2 gives you a $265K ralley car - which is funding my growing garage.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I guess I should now change my question to "What's the baddest car in the whole game?" :D.

Flawer. :grumpy: I knew this flaw will corrupt new racers. :guilty:

thanks for the tip, i need to do that race. i started out with $110K and got a 95 integra type r, an 89 skyline gt-r, and a 96 200sx so i could do all the drivetrain races right off the bat. Integra is pretty good with just race exhaust, weight reduction, and stage 1 turbo, handles well, you can beat the FF races with ease.
