Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of Hendrix's Little Wing puts Clapton's version with Derek And The Dominos out on its ass.

By the way, The Who wrote My Generation, not the Beatles.

Now, I like the Jimi version better (which is also a cover of an old Earl King tune. The guitar has a tougher sound, plus Hendrix goes down an octave for the second chord in the chorus rather than up, which I think sounds more baddass.

John Mellencamp's live cover of "Wild Night" is better than Van Morrison's, but in truth, there are no covers better than originals. Cover artists take the original then re-work it for a certain genre. Even if it's "better," it isn't original, and the cover artists have the original to use as a building block. So if there's a cover, it had sure better be better than the original, otherwise the cover band failed at their job.

Jimi's cover of Dylan's "All along the watchtower". Dylan vowed never to play it live again after hearing Jimi's version.

Honorable mention to Dave Matthews Band's version of the same song.

Also Cake's version of Gloria Gaynor's "I will survive". Simply because it made it socially acceptable for men to sing along with it
