It's a toss up between three, i think:

Geoff Crammond's F1 game from years ago, published by Microprose (PC/Amiga/ST)

F1 '97 on the PS1, by Psygnosis(now Studio Liverpool)

The first F1 game on PS2(F1' 03 i think), again by Studio Liverpool

'07? I highly doubt you meant "first game". I've played many F1 games, but I always felt the EA F1 games were way too arcady. I got SCEE's F1 2003 as one of my first games and I've always enjoyed it quite much.

Sorry i meant the first one on PS2 by Studio Liverpool, you know the one with the green box that came with a free DVD. The one incidentally that didn't have a cockpit view - weird that. Was it 2003? Yeah i agree, EA's F1 games were bad. That's why they stopped them.

It's a toss up between Microprose/Crammond's Grand Prix 3, EA's F1 Challenge and Papyrus' Grand Prix Legends.

I put that game in last night just to confirm my memory, the AI in that game is beyond the word rubberband. The only downfall for '99 I believe.

Depends what you mean by best. The best game has to be F1 2010, in terms of it's technology and gameplay.

But my favourite? Definitely Formula 1 97; a fantastic season in reality, superb car models for the time, wonderful tracks, plenty of tuning options, a progressive damage model, failures, variable weather, excellent AI as well as that legendary commentary from Murray Walker and Martin Brundle.

For me, the only downside to that game is that you can only tune your car prior to a session; so you can tune it before practice, but you have to exit and go to qualifying before you can tune it again. That aside, it is a wonderful game that also has challenging yet forgiving physics. A true masterclass for the Playstation.

Running a close second is Grand Prix 4. Not a great game by itself, but the mods for it make it a great game. The 1994 one is like the game Grand Prix 2 deserved to be; the 1995 one is alright but it's a b!tch for loading. And oh lord, the 1991 mod is just absolute win.

For realistic driving experience, Ferrari Virtual Academy
For best single player career experience - F1 2010
For best online experience - iRacing

For best overall experience - Rfactor with BMW Sauber 2007 F1, or FSone 2009.

Well, the most ground breaking at that time was indeed Geoff Crammonds F1, I played It on the ST and no game, besides close runner up GT1, amazed me more in all those years.

F1 '97 was good too, but I see no mention of Grand Prix Challenge on the PS2. I thought It was a very good game and played It a lot.

There are three for me.
1. F1 2010 as its career and MP is fun.
2. F1 2001 on pc white and silver box EA sports as its was brilliant for its time and the first f1 game i had since 95.
3. F1 95 as its what got me into f1 racing even though I was very young.

F1 1991 Historic mod on Rf.

it may be late now, but if anyone doesn't have an objection, I'd like to give my answer here too.

I have played so far only F1 95,97-99 and 2010. And my favourite is still F1 '97. The reason may be the memories of childhood or the "simplicity" of racing with balanced rules and also the variable weather change. The gameplay was great and it still is. Graphics is the one thing, gameplay is the other thing....

Grand Prix Challenge on the PS2. 👍

That game looks absolutely stunning for a PS2 game.
And it doesn't handle too bad either.

I guess "the best" means the F1 game one would prefer and enyoj the most and that would be Formula One Championship Edition (PS3) without a doubt.

Yesterday Geoff Crammond's F1 game by Microprose.

Today almost any F1 mod in rFactor.

F1 2005 and 2006 got a lot of play time from me, they were great fun. Formula One for the PS1, based on the 1995 season, was a very good game too. F1 2010 would be right up there for me if it wasn't for my dissatisfaction with the AI.

Grand Prix 4, awesome, plain and simple. Grand Prix 3 as well before that, such great games. Love F1 2010 and F1 1997 as well.

F1 Challenge for me. Even if its community is dying down a bit it's still a good game for me. :) Plus you can adjust your profile (with some not very hard Notepad adjustments) for all kinds of realistic lovelies.

And of course the ability to create massive crashes on Monaco, Spa or Montreal with two key presses. :D

F1 2010 is good as well, plenty of tech in there. 05 and 06 are sweet too.
