I just got back from my family x-mas party, and my brother-in-law (audio snob) heard that I wanted some headphones to listen to MP3's in the library while studying....he got me The Grado Labs SR60s They are unbelievable...anyone who appreciates good audio will love these. I've been doing nothing but listening to music for the past 2 hours. Pick some up if you have a chance.

I use a pair of Sennheiser HD 497's, only 50 bucks, and incredible sound for the price 👍. It's amazing how much different they sound compared to the ones you get with CD players.

Yes, Grado makes some sweet stuff....

Congrats!

Grado is known for making excellent headphones. The best headphones ever are made by Stax in my opinion, they make electrostatic headphones. But they cost a lot, and I mean a lot of money. Grado is not on the cheap side either.
If you want a very very good but reasonably priced headphone, get the top models from Beyerdynamic or Sennheiser. I have a Sennheiser HD 580 ovation, and though it's a few years old it's really really good.

EDIT: I just looked up the price of the Grado SR 60, and at 125€ (150-160$) it's very good value. A bargain! 👍

Cheers,
the Interceptor

I was going to get the sr60's myself over the summer. Unfortunately, the only place in Toronto that sells them was charging $150 more than the MSRP so I never bothered.

By the way, just wait till those headphones get past the break-in period. Once the drivers on the phones get worn in, they'll start to sound better.

@Interceptor - they shouldn't cost you more than $100 US for the pair. That's why the sr60's are dubbed as the best sub $100 headphones on the market :)

I have a pair of Koss UR/29's and I love them. I think I got them last year for xmas. Oh and Merry Xmas everyone, it's Dec 25th! Note that if you think your music sounds good on your .mp3 player, it will sound amazing from your CD player. Really good headphones bring out a huge difference between .mp3 player quality and CD quality. The CD's are amazing. I was listening to Personal Jesus on my discman over and over because it just sounded amazing, but when I transfered it to my .mp3 player I got kind of dissapointed.

I've got my Triports, and they are great. Excellent sound quality, little distortion, great bass, and they are very comfortable to wear for an extended period of time. But they do have a severe drawback. They leak sound like crazy. They are absolutely useless for listening in public places where you don't want to disturb other people, unless you don't mind listening to your music at a low volume. Other than that though, they are extremely solid headphones, and the 5 foot extention cable that is included gives a great amount of mobility!

:sly: ha...mine is all that with crazy sound insulation. I cranked the volume on the cord and on .mp3 and played marilyn manson, and all i had to do was put the 2 muffs together and you could hear nothing. And my cord is 8' .

In the studio, I use a set of AKG K240DF, as well a several Sony MDR-7509. The Sony are great at handling full range, and the abuse that is necessary of monitoring bass guitar and kick drum frequencies.

I use a cheap pair of Labtec Elite 35s. I think I got them for around $18 at newegg. The sound is pretty good for the price, but they get uncomfortable for me after about 30 minutes.

AudioAdvisor.com lists the sr60s at $69 and 80s at $95.

uncomfortable

That's because of the sound volume. If it's too loud your ears actually swell up around the earphone, causing that uncomfortable experience.

I use a set of Samsungs. Hell if I know what model, they came with an mp3 player mum got me. 128mb - I never use it anymore, not surprisingly. Headphones come in handy though. Been put through a rigorous test since I got them, and passed with flying colours.

My only complaints are:

  • The decorative thingies on the side fell off the other day, and they looked awesome
  • One of the cords leading to the ear is longer than the other, which means that one hangs normally but the other has quite a lot of overhang, and looks bad. If I knew anything about electronics I'd fix it.

I'm pretty much looking at Emad here, but anyone can put their $0.02 in - what's the best brand and model of canal phone on the market right now? Price not applicable.

Yes, indeed.
Mine are rather sensitive about fidgeting with the wire, though.
People tell me they just need to be broken in.

Can't all of you also post the prices you bought them for, so we who are planning to buy some can consider which one ?

I'm very happy with these (below pic). I had a pair of Sony's MDVR-V6 headphones, and they lasted me until the foam padding wore out! This new pair is even better! And they're only $99.95.

It happens even if they're quiet.

My bro has a pair of those. They are very nice, only they hurt my ears after wearing them for a while.

Yeah, they're good for about an hour or so. Not good for long listening sessions.

I'm considering the purchase of the SR60's soon, I hope. The SR80's I think are like the best pair of headphones under $100, also.

I want my music so sound better is all.

Whoa he's right. My ears were starting to feel kind of funny after about 2 hours, and (i usually have cold hands) I grabbed my ears and I could literally feel them shirnking in size. Pretty cool stuff. I'm gonna try that with my nose.

My Samsungs can stand a fair old whack of sound through them, I'm very happy with the set I currently own. My computer's speakers own too, they get VERY loud indeed and handle the sound nicely.

Solid Lifters and Pako - I prefer canal phones. Those look quite nice though.
